Chicago Blackhawks Garden at the Chicago Flower Show

This year's theme of "The Sport of Gardening" at the Chicago Flower & Garden Show is best exemplified by the garden installation by Christy Webber Landscapes, who teamed with the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks organization. Of all the garden displays this year this particular garden is my favorite, and I don't even follow sports! Not only is it in keeping with the sports theme, it takes a garden them and elevates it beyond the kitschy and creates something beautiful that even I wouldn't mind replicated in my yard.

The outdoor entertainment area complete with television, the Blackhawks logo created out of a living wall, the colors, the fountain and pool that looks like a hockey rink, the garden fence made from hockey sticks, the proportions and plant selections is pitch perfect. I asked if the pool could be frozen over to create a mini-hockey rink and the employee working there during the show said that it could, but that the plastic liner that create the hockey rink would have to be removed.  I've gone back to see the Chicago Blackhawks garden three times now and every time I've forgotten to photograph the plants because I've just been wowed by everything else about the garden.

Go see it for yourself. The Chicago Flower & Garden Show runs through March 13th.

  • Thanks for this MBT - I only looked through the hockey-stick fence (twice.) I didn't realize this one was Christy Weber's. I like her work, and it's good to see so many more aspects of the garden than what I saw in person.

The plant selection, at the back of the garden, was a nice color combination. I'm going to have to go back and photograph it because I really liked it. Perhaps my favorite part was they way the made and outline of the Blackhawks' history using the rings in the tree. That was really creative.

I saw the fence and water features, but missed the cool tree stump. Elsewhere, did you happen to see those orange & yellow painted trees like on Lakeshore Dr. (near the end w/ the press room, toward the side with the exit/entrance doors)? If you go again, could you pretty please get a photo of those for me? (Mine is sucktastically blurry and I love them so!) Thanks.

Didn't see those, hopefully I'll remember when I go back this weekend.
