Lurie Garden Seed Swap February 12, 2011.
1st floor Garland Room Chicago Cultural Center
Get ready for spring as you share seeds and information with fellow gardeners. Led by Lurie Garden staff who will be on hand to provide seeds and tips for planting and germination. 10AM-NOON. Free, pre-register by calling Lurie Garden office at 312.742.TIXS(8497).
Some tips for swapping your saved seeds:

Pack seeds in paper coin envelopes or plastic baggies. Label seed packs with botanical and common name. Five seed-per pack minimum for larger and common seeds. Thirty seed-per pack minimum for smaller seeds. If you don't have small coin envelopes or want to buy little plastic baggies, you can cut up junk mail envelopes into smaller envelopes to hold your seeds.

Why do you want to swap seeds? It's a fun way to meet other gardeners and people interested in beautifying their communities and growing their own food. There will be a brief presentation on how to easily and frugally start seeds in your home and garden. Don't forget to call the Lurie Garden office at 312.742.TIXS(8497) to RSVP. I've created a Facebook event on the MrBrownThumb Facebook page if you need a reminder closer to the event. There's also a Twitvite if you prefer. One Seed Chicago will be on hand so you can vote in person if you haven't voted online. NeighborSpace, the organization behind One Seed Chicago will provide some free seeds to attendees.
On the same day as the Lurie Garden Seed Swap is the last of the Sweet Saturdays at the Garfield Park Conservatory. Hope on the Green Line and:
"Come learn which sweet treats grow on trees at the Garfield Park Conservatory! Sweet Saturdays focuses on plants that provide the key ingredients to some of our favorite sweet treats. The Garfield Park Conservatory, a veritable plant-based candy show, is home to many living sweets such as bananas, vanilla beans, cinnamon bark, and chocolate trees. Visitors of all ages can sample the facts, the flavors and the fun of some of the most tantalizing tropical treats." More info
UPDATE: The Garfield Park Conservatory is looking for more volunteers for Sweet Saturday's event. In particular they need volunteers for this Saturday February 5th. If you can volunteer for the 1-4:30pm shift please call Mattie Wilson the volunteer Program Coordinator at 773.638.1766 x26 or email volunteer@garfieldpark.org

  • Wish I could make it to the Lurie seed swap, but it's my granddaughter's first birthday party. Sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun!

  • In reply to ssgardengirl:

Has it been a year already? Wow, time really flies. Sorry you can't join us, but I'm sure we'll see each other at the CF&GS.

  • In reply to MrBrownThumb:

I know! It's amazing - she's gone from helpless infant to active, engaged, happy, beautiful toddler at lightening speed.

I'll be there at the show!

  • In reply to MrBrownThumb:

I LOVE the beatato--that is TOO clever! :)

  • In reply to gardenfaerie:

Thanks, although I'm sure I copied the concept from somewhere else.

  • In reply to ssgardengirl:
