Houseplants in a Chicago Window

Houseplants in a Chicago Window

It has been a couple of years since I was seriously into houseplants. Lately it seems like I'm spotting them, take this collection of houseplants in a Chicago window for example.

The picture is not the best, but it is of a window in the Pilsen neighborhood just south of Honky Tonk BBQ on Racine Avenue stuffed with houseplants. Among the schefflera, pothos(?) chotchkies and dead plants is a big-ass fake fern. I love this. What is it about Chicagoans gardening with fake plants? Indoor gardeners, balcony gardeners, raised bed gardeners they all do this in Chicago. From the humblest of neighborhoods to the ritzy Gold Coast, I've seen people trying to pass off fake plants among real-live plants. Do the people who do this think they're actually fooling anyone? Usually they're in locations where a real plant would do great with some attention. This window, for example, faces East: a houseplant grower in Chicago would kill for this kind of uninterrupted sunlight.
If you're ever in the area do check out this window and the accompanying window with the Easter decorations and cacti dish gardens.

  • I'm always amazed, whenever I visit Chicago, how many plants I see crammed onto balconies and in windows. More than other big cities I've visited and way, way more than I see in Detroit. I like the fake fern a lot. A friend's neighbors have plastic Xmas trees (the old, ugly, obviously fake ones) year-round lining their shared driveway, which is less endearing. And 'member we saw some fun fake plants on the walk? I forget (!) what they were, but I really liked them in that swanky context.

Gardenfaerie, So am I. I saw the coolest display this summer, but didn't get a chance to take a picture. It was the only window on a three story brick building and it was crammed with plants. Houseplants and annuals all hanging up there growing out over, along and above the window. It was amazing. Yeah the Gold Coast garden walk is where we same some fake plants. One of my neighbors has fake tulips.

ETA: This, like so many of my best ideas I stole from Gayla Tail. When I took this picture, I had her website http://storefrontgardens.com/ in mind. It hasn't been updated in a while, but I love the idea of photographing plants people keep in their windows.

Wow. That's a classic for sure! Love it. All that's missing is some macrame' ornamentation.

  • In reply to ssgardengirl:

That's what that's called! I couldn't remember macrame for the life of me! Yes, all they need is a hanging pot suspended in a macrame sling.

  • In reply to gardenfaerie:

do fake plants need light too? ha ha!

Haha, right? Apparently they do. I've spotted more fake plants in windows since posting this. Hope I get a chance to go back and take pictures. :0)
