Beyond Gourmet Dinner
Bon Appétit presents Chicago Gourmet’s Beyond Gourmet Dinner Series
announces Summer Grill Night at The Chop Shop on Tuesday, August 12, the second event in the new quarterly series created to celebrate Chicago’s exceptional culinary and beverage industry throughout the year. Providing unique opportunities to interact with the city’s talented chefs, mixologists, sommeliers and tastemakers through an evening of food, wine and cocktails, Beyond Gourmet whets the appetite of those planning to attend Bon Appétit presents Chicago Gourmet this fall.

SideDoor (100 E. Ontario St.) invites local foodies and beer connoisseurs to enjoy the American-style gastropub’s first ever ‘Best of Midwest’ Beer Dinner on Wednesday, August 27. The five course menu, a collaborative creation by Executive Chef Victor Newgren and Beverage Director Jeff Van Der Tuuk, boasts Midwestern inspired fare, complemented by six beers from some the region’s most notable brewers.
The exclusive event, beginning at 6:30 p.m., invites guests to mix and mingle with Chef Newgren and Jeff Van Der Tuuk as they enjoy an appetizer and five-course meal, paired with a tasting portion of beer. Throughout the meal, Van Der Tuuk will also provide guests with an education and insights behind each of the carefully selected brews. Featured brewers include: Off Color Brewing; Perennial Artisan Ales; Against the Grain Brewery; Boulevard Brewing Company; Three Floyds Brewing Company; and Great Divide Brewing Company.

The Boarding House, 720 N Wells, is excited to present an evening with Oregon winemaking legend, David Adelsheim on Thursday, August 14, 2014. Adelsheim will lead a tasting and discussion of his wines, including winery exclusives, paired with a five-course dinner created by The Boarding House’s Executive Chef Tanya Baker.
Adelsheim is President of Adelsheim Vineyard, which he founded with Ginny Adelsheim in 1971. As one of the founders of the Oregon wine industry, he helped set standards of excellence for the region. For his significant impact on the establishment and growth of the Oregon wine industry, he has been named the 2006 Oregon Vintner of the Year at the Classic Wines Auction, a 2010 Oregon History Maker by the Oregon Historical Society, as well as been honored with the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Oregon Wine Board.

Free Dessert for a Cause
Kimpton Restaurants of Chicago are pitching in to support “Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day” on September 12, 2014. September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Governor Quinn and Mayor Emanuel have deemed September 12, 2014 as National Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Day. This year Bear Necessities will be collecting lightly used gym shoes to publicly display on the 14th as a symbol of the thousands touched by pediatric cancer. After the event, the shoes will be donated the non-profit, Share Your Soles.
Now through September 1, each of the Kimpton Restaurants of Chicago – Sable Kitchen & Bar, Atwood Restaurant, 312 Chicago and South Water Kitchen – will be collecting gym shoe donations. For each pair of shoes collected, guests will be given a voucher for a free dessert at any restaurant, for their sweet efforts in helping support Bear Necessities.
Taco Eating Contest
Newport Bar and Grill, located in Lakeview’s Southport corridor, launched a Taco eating contest. Customers have a chance to qualify for the championship round every Thursday by eating as many $1 Cajun steak tacos as possible in 30 minutes. *Contestants must notify the manager when they arrive and be supervised and timed in order to qualify.
The top six male and top six female qualifiers will face off in the championship round, Friday, August 22, where they will have 30 minutes to eat as many complimentary tacos as possible. In February, the winning contestant ate a record 50 tacos in the first 20 minutes of the championship round.
The winner from each bracket will receive $100, a “Taco Trophy” and immeasurable notoriety. Supporters are welcome to cheer on contestants and enjoy $1 Cajun steak tacos, $1.50 PBR, Rolling Rock, and Busch Light cans, $3 sweet tea lemonades and $4 SOCO lime shots. Complimentary tacos only provided for top 12 contestants during the Championship round.

Cocktails with coworkers are now carefree! Class is back in session! Well cooking class that is. Executive Chef Luca Corazzina will be teaching “Scoula 312” at 312 Chicago on the first or second Saturday of every month, August through December. Guests will have the opportunity to learn authentic Italian recipes from Chef Luca, a Padova native, who grew up learning to cook by his mother’s side. A variety of techniques and recipes will be taught, including:
