Gluten Free Butterball Gravy Exists

gluten free gravy boat.jpgI thought it was a myth at first, like the Loch Ness Monster, but apparently it does exist. Just in time for Thanksgiving, Butterball is giving gluten the bird. Ohh! I know I just couldn't help myself to that pun. I guess mainstream companies are catching up. This shouldn't be much of a surprise since Butterball was the first to come out with the innovative turkey Lifter-oo.

I called the Butterball Turkey Talk-line 1-800-BUTTERBALL (1-800-288-8372) to get the scoop. The gravy packet IS gluten-free but is only sold in certain cuts like turkey breast and the Li'L Butterballs. The bigger turkeys have enough drippings and juice that they don't need the packet. If you just need gravy the packets are sold on their own as well. If you have more questions or need some turkey how-to help the hotline is open November and December.

A few cautionary words of advice, make sure to continue to read the label, as some stores might sell older packets. Turkey is naturally gluten free but if you order the bird with stuffing inside then it is not.

  • Thanks for writing about this. The holidays are particularly challenging for those of us who need to remain gluten-free. I found this same product a few weeks ago and then I developed a delicious recipe for stuffing... It is Gluten-Free Corn Chex Sage Stuffing for Roast Chicken or Turkey. The recipe is available at http://glutenfreesimplicity.wordpress.com/2009/10/22/stuff-your-gluten-free-thanksgiving-turkey-with-gluten-free-corn-chex-stuffing/.

    Have a nice Thanksgiving!

  • William,

Thank you for sharing this recipe. I didn't realize that Corn Chex was gluten free. I may have to figure out a gluten free recipe for the American classic: Chex Mix! I hope you have a fabulous, delicious and gluten-free Thanksgiving as well.

    Sincerely,
    Patricia Biesen

  • Hi Patricia -- Corn Chex and some other Chex versions have been "Gluten-Free" for about 6 months now.... BUT.. be sure to read the box and look for "Gluten-Free".. because I have found that this can vary depending on which region one is in and and which store one is shopping at. For more information about this, one can go to http://gluten-freebrands.blogspot.com/2009/06/corn-chex-cereal.html/ Have a wonderful Turkey Day!!!
