The Dark Matters 24-Hr Horror Film Challenge

The Dark Matters 24-Hr Horror Film Challenge

Do you have what it takes to organize and film a short horror movie within the span of one day? Side Street Studio Arts presents the Dark Matters 24-Hr Horror Film Challenge, a contest for filmmakers to create a short film within 24 hours for a cash prize.

  • 1st Place winners receive the SLEEPLESS Award and $200 cash.
  • 2nd Place winners get $75 cash.
  • 3rd Place winners get $50 cash.
  • Special prizes will be awarded for “Best of” categories (Best Scream, Best Death).

The registration fee is $50 per team and is due by 5pm on September 25th, 2019 (per the challenge listing). (However, the registration form lists a later deadline as being Sept. 28th at 5pm and a $75 late registration deadline of Oct. 4th at 5pm).

Filmmakers, along with their cast and crew (or alone, if it's a one-person team) will be challenged on October 4th to create a 3-10 minute short horror film using any style, minus anything like gratuitous nudity or sexual acts. So, within 24 hours, get the script ready, film the actors (or use a laptop if no crew), shoot, edit, add sound/music, and finalize the film.

Each team will receive a list of specified tasks to complete, as well as a list of special properties to be used, thus making the challenge a real time event. There will be support teams available to help and advise the participants prior to and throughout the challenge period if required.

The Dark Matters premiere showcasing the finished films will be on Saturday, October 5th at 6pm. Side Street Studio Arts is located at 15 Ziegler Ct., Elgin, IL 60120.

If lodging is necessary for this challenge, participants must find their own, but they will be allowed access to all Side Street Studio Arts spaces to create, rest, and eat if needed. They will also send accreditations for the festival via email.

Good luck!
