The Woman in Black has been terrifying audiences for 30 years in London. Royal George Theatre is prepared to shock Chicago audiences with this chilling production presented by PW Productions and Pemberley Productions.
Susan Hill's deeply unsettling Gothic ghost story (adapted for the stage by Stephen Mallatratt) is the American premiere of the original London West End production (directed by Robin Herford, who will recreate his original staging with a Chicago-based cast).
Set in an isolated, windswept mansion with tragic secrets hidden within, a young lawyer glimpses horrific visions behind its shuttered windows. Only two actors perform, keeping the tension going while transporting audiences into a dark, chilling, ghostly world.
“The atmosphere is so charged-up that on more than one occasion, the entire audience screamed in terror.” - The Independent (London).
Susan Hill published her novel, The Woman in Black, in 1983. Director Robin Herford commissioned Stephen Mallatratt to adapt the story for the stage in 1987. Selling out performances for months, they moved the play to London's West End in ’89. In 2012, Daniel Radcliffe starred in the major motion picture.
The Chicago production will star Bradley Armacost as Arthur Kipps and Adam Wesley Brown as The Actor. Bradley has worked extensively on stage in Chicago and has acted in various television series (The Exorcist, Chicago Fire, Empire). Adam's theatre credits include Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, and more.
Since Director Robin Herford first commissioned the adaptation in the late ’80s, the production has gone on to run in London's West End for almost 30 years with 12 national tours. He also directed productions of this play in Tokyo (in Japanese), India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, and now, America!
Pemberley Productions was founded by Andrew D. Hamingson and Tim Smith, who are dedicated to bringing both European drama to the States and North American drama to Europe.
PW Productions has produced some of the most successful productions in British theatre over the past 30 years. They also work as bookkeepers, managers, and accountants for over 500 productions in London, the UK, and beyond.
