When considering the independent feature film, Chicago Rot, I can't think of a truer phrase than calling it a “labor of love.” Besides being a production featuring Chicago-based actors, crew and locations, it was a project everyone involved had placed their heart and souls into so much that it even meant working for free. Today, all those years of hard work are paying off as the film is being released under the distribution label Midnight Releasing, as well as a screening this Thursday, April 6th, at the Music Box Theatre!
Chicago Rot follows a character named Les, aka “The Ghoul,” (Brant McCrea, who co-wrote the script with director Dorian Weinzimmer) who is released from a 10-year stint in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Naturally, revenge is on his mind–especially since his mother was killed and his soul stolen–so he quickly takes to the unlit streets of Chicago's festering underground to get vengeance once and for all. Anyone who has found themselves walking through the dingy, gloomy areas of the city's underbelly alone will find a lot of the location shots very familiar. This not only sets the grim tone, but gives the film a stronger Chicago feel than other films shot in the city because it depicts a more realistic setting than typical tourist-happy shots.
After years of rotting in Joliet, Les, a wrongfully imprisoned street legend known as “The Ghoul,” is released into a mad search through Chicago's back alleys for the man who slaughtered his mother and robbed him of his soul. Aided by enigmatic benefactors, he must delve beneath the city into a modern labyrinth of gutters whose tendrils have grown deep while he was gone. What unfolds is a desperate tale of brute force tragedy set in the supernatural underworld of Chicago, where heroes are reduced to horror-shows, villains dream of their own demise, and good and evil prove to be antiquated concepts.

On a personal note, I was lucky to grab an opportunity to see the film at the Vic Theatre in October of 2015. My initial review was, “Damn! Chicago Rot doesn't play around. It's gloriously brutal and gory, amusing, punch-your-face unpredictable, and... Lasers!” It's been so long, I forgot just how incredibly weird this movie is and really can't wait to read what the rest of you will say after viewing this gem. Below are a few photos I took during the event.
