TRAIN TO BUSAN opens at the Music Box Theatre this weekend. (Source: IMDb.com)

Happy New Year, everyone! Things are looking quite busy for 2017 already. Next weekend looks a bit busier, but there are some great film options opening this weekend that I'd like to recommend to those willing to fight the cold weather and enjoy some weekend genre entertainment.

MOVIES:

TRAIN TO BUSAN - Several brilliant horror and mystery films came out of South Korea in 2016 (3 of which will be on my upcoming top 2016 list) and this isn't just any average zombie flick. The little girl (Soo-an Kim) is a shining star with serious dramatic chops. You'll laugh, cry, and root for the characters. A few peers have described this film as, “Dawn of the Dead meets Snowpiercer.” Worth watching on the big screen tonight and tomorrow at midnight! Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Avenue, Chicago, IL 60613.

RESERVOIR DOGS - Screens at 7pm & 9:30pm tonight and at 1:30pm on Sunday. Doc Films, Max Palevsky Cinema, Ida Noyes Hall, University of Chicago, 1212 E. 59th, Chicago, IL 60637. $5.

FREAKS [35mm] - Tod Browning's ageless, disturbing classic screens Sat./Sun. at 11:30am. Still relevant to this day and not one to be missed, whether you're a horror fan or not. “Gooble-gobble, one of us! One of us! We accept her! Gooble-gobble!” Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Avenue, Chicago, IL 60613.

HOMO SAPIENS - Chicago premiere of this spellbinding documentary which quietly exhibits evidence of human abandonment of architectural sites all over the world. Reviews suggest the powerful message does not get diminished by a lack of dialogue due to exceptional sound design and stark, strong imagery of decaying civilizations using an almost post-apocalyptic vision. Screens tonight at 7:45pm and on January 10th at 8:15pm. Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State Street, Chicago, IL 60601.

THRONE OF BLOOD [35mm] - The Gene Siskel Film Center offers a tribute celebrating the work of legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune by screening a selection of his films starting January 7th through February 2nd. A 35mm print of Kurosawa's Throne of Blood screens this Saturday at 4:45pm and Thursday at 6:00pm. Also, Keanu Reeves narrates Mifune: The Last Samurai this Saturday at 3:00pm and Monday at 6:00pm. 164 N. State Street, Chicago, IL 60601.
