This weekend, the options are plentiful in and around the Chicagoland area: a few big conventions, a new horror store grand opening, a selection of films to see on 35mm, and a few really cool ongoing art exhibits among other things!
Alfonso Cuarón's Oscar-winning space thriller Gravity screens in 35mm at Doc Films on March 15th at 7pm & 9pm and on Sunday at 3pm. Professor Daniel E. Holz (who teaches the class “Spacetime and Black Holes”) will be on hand at the 7:00pm screening to speak about the movie. Event page HERE.
Walker Stalker Con, a zombie, horror, and sci-fi convention, runs all weekend March 14th-16th at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. The main draw is that it's basically a convention for diehard fans of The Walking Dead, but there is a lot more going on than that, not to mention a big zombie bash on Saturday night at 9:30pm for the 18+ crowd. Tickets to the bash are open to the public for $20! See the site for a full schedule and pertinent information HERE. (Goldstar members can get half-price tickets!)
The Indie Horror Film Festival features movies, signings, and more at Schurz Assembly Hall, 3601 N. Milwaukee Avenue. Among the movies playing is Chicago-based production Dark Realm, screening on Sunday at 5:30pm. TICKETS.
NEW HORROR STORE! Longtime Chicago horror representative and vendor Jill of Lixonline is having an official grand opening of her new store LIX from noon to 8pm on Friday, March 14th & Saturday, March 15th at 22 E. Springfield, Champaign, IL 61820. She and her husband, Gregg Olheiser, had a soft store opening on Feb. 28th, but the big deal is tomorrow. Jill has been selling her spooky wares, unique horror t-shirts, hoodies, and handmade bags and horror dresses for many years on the convention circuit. Always wearing a big smile and holding homemade cookies, she makes anyone feel right at home. 217-328-JILL (5455). Facebook Event Page.
