5 Classy Horror Productions to See in Chicago

Throughout the year, Chicago is ripe with stage productions everywhere you look. However, it is not often that a handful of notable horror-themed productions will simultaneously grace the stage outside the month of October. For whatever reason, January has been an impressive month for horror on the stage. I'd like to address the standouts that are currently playing–plus an amazing Hitchcock event not to miss!

Young Frankenstein - Drury Lane Theatre presents a re-imagining of Mel Brooks' hilarious comedy spoofing the story of Dr. Frankenstein and his monster.  Runs through January 26th, 2014. (Event is in Oakbrook Terrace, IL) TICKETS (Goldstar members discount tickets available.)

The Shadow Over Innsmouth - WildClaw Theatre showcases a very creepy tale by the great H.P. Lovecraft at the Athenaeum Theatre. Delve into the isolated village of Innsmouth, MA, where a particularly pungent odor of rotting fish emanates throughout the town and the secrets run wild. Runs through January 26th, 2014. TICKETS (Goldstar members discount tickets available.)

The Phantom of the Opera - Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical takes a national tour in 2014 with a beautiful production displaying fantastic special effects, intricate costume design, and an orchestra of 52. Runs at the Cadillac Palace Theatre until March 2nd! TICKETS (Goldstar members discount tickets available.)

Pontypool - Presented by Strawdog Theatre, the play is back for another run, adapted by Tony Burgess from his novel Pontypool Changes Everything. A rather deadly virus suddenly infects the small town of Pontypool, Ontario and Grant Mazzy, town radio DJ, is smack in the middle of the chaos. Runs through Feb. 1st. TICKETS (Goldstar members discount tickets available.)

Vertigo - Experience Alfred Hitchcock's thriller masterpiece with class at the Symphony Center where the soundtrack will be performed live by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra against the backdrop of the film screening. Bernard Herrmann's haunting score against the film will surely be a moment to remember. Friday, January 24th at 8:00pm. TICKETS
