Halloween Artist Reception to Showcase Work by Leading Dark Artists

The third annual Maleficium dark art exhibition opening Saturday features artwork by many of today's leading horror artists. Curated by J. Anthony Kosar (FACE OFF Season 4 Champion), this Halloween-themed show offers art in various media from Nov. 2nd through Nov. 30th at Kosart Effects Studios. Maleficium means “mischief” in Latin for describing black magic and the mysterious world of the dark arts. Meet many of the artists and catch sight of David Richardson's sculpture collaboration with Clive Barker!

The artist reception is Saturday, November 2nd from 1pm-10pm and is free to all ages, though it's best to use discretion with kids as the content is on the darker side. Wine and cheese will be served and a raffle to benefit Little Friends Inc charity will be held. Costumes are optional! Artists include J. Anthony Kosar, Thomas Kuebler, Jordu Schell, Joshua Hoffine, David Richardson, Chad Savage, Dave Dorman, and more! After the opening, visitors may view the exhibit Nov. 3rd through Nov. 30th by appointment only. For info, call 630-310-8353. Facebook event page.

J. Anthony Kosar teaches the Art of FX through his company Kosart Effects Studios, LLC at his studio in Westmont, IL. He is a master of fine art and specializes in illustration, sculpture, and special effects. Before winning last year's Face Off competition on Syfy, he has interned at the Stan Winston Studio where he created effects for films such as Avatar and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. His work on Face Off was mind-blowing and we on The Chicago Creepout rooted for him all the way. Anthony has curated Maleficium three years now and it's one of the biggest horror art shows in the Midwest. Halloween lives on this weekend!

Artist Jordu Schell can be seen on the Travel Channel's Making Monsters and Toy Hunter. He is a great sculptor, concept artist, and Halloween mask maker whose work has been in the film and television business for over 20 years. Some films include: Bride of Re-Animator, Predator 2, Edward Scissorhands, and Batman Returns. He also designed creatures for Avatar and The Mist!

Chicago's own Chad Savage has work ranging in various media, including font design, which can be found anywhere from TV commercials to food packaging at your local store! His fonts are creepy and so are his paintings which are typically Halloween-themed. Chad is the epitome of Halloween, living and breathing it daily. He is also deeply involved within the haunted attraction industries, is the man behind sinistervisions.com and is the force behind chicagohorror.com, chicagozombie.com, darkchicago.com, and more!

David Richardson (owner of Creative Metal Works, LLC) is a postmodern surrealistic sculptor hailing from Colorado, whose work has been in Gothic Beauty Magazine, Amazing Figure Modeler Magazine, and at many art exhibits across the U.S. and abroad. He's currently collaborating with the great Clive Barker on a few sculpture projects! Pictured above is a limited edition aluminum cast wall hanger based on Clive's 1997 sketch “V for Vice Versa” which was published within his A-Z of Horror book. Pictured below are the pewter skull medallions that tribute Clive's sumi sketch and also come in a limited edition bronze casting. Purchase them HERE. David's work is not a stranger to the Chicago art scene, having exhibited at Gallery Provocateur in 2011.
