In the Name of Horror, Vote for the Midway Drive-In

Drive-ins and horror movies go together as spectacularly as peanut butter and jelly, which is why the Midway Drive-in needs our vote. Owned and operated by Mike and Mia Kerz (who also run Flashback Weekend Horror Con), the Midway has been dedicated to the preservation of what they accurately call “The Drive-In Horror Legacy.” A digital projector is needed to continue this legacy.

By the end of this year, movie studios will no longer issue new films on 35mm, therefore most drive-in theaters will suffer the threat of permanent closure unless they can manage to upgrade to digital. However, the upgrade costs a hefty fee of around $80,000. Here's where Honda comes in. They believe in drive-in preservation and are offering a wonderful campaign called Project Drive-in. They will donate five digital projectors to theaters that receive the most votes!

WHAT YOU CAN DO: At no cost to you, simply vote twice a day (once online and once via text) and tell your friends! Most importantly, vote DAILY! Voting ends September 9th at 9:00pm.

Vote daily on the Honda site for Midway Drive-In under Sterling, IL at:

Vote daily by texting VOTE80 to 444999.

The Midway Drive-in has acquired landmark status, boasts a 90-ft. screen, has 1950's-styled concessions, a retro spaceship ticket booth, a playground for children, and even harbors a bat house! The bats are hidden amidst the bushes, but I'll never forget the time they all screeched the moment Dracula commanded, “Say my name!” in a vintage clip playing on the screen. What timing! (I hope it's still there)

The Midway has been a host to many amazing horror fests, screening classic 35mm horror prints such as The Thing, Near Dark, Aliens, Night of the Demons, Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, The Howling, The Town that Dreaded Sundown, Re-Animator, TCM, and more.

Please vote daily and spread the word! The Midway has announced that if they are chosen as one of the five projector recipients of the Honda campaign, they will have a special drive-in horror fest night with FREE ADMISSION! This will only happen if they win, of course, as their way of thanking fans for so much support.

Head over to the Midway this weekend for THE CONJURING and PACIFIC RIM on August 23rd and 24th!

Here's a link to my post on earlier attempts to save this theater.
