Go Big or Go Home! Elgin Monster Mash-Up and Nightmare on Chicago Street Festivals

If you'd like to celebrate Halloween on a grander scale this year, head on over to Elgin for spooky fun of epic proportions. Costumes (as ghastly as you want it) are strongly encouraged, especially at Nightmare on Chicago Street. Nothing like shambling around a street decorated like the apocalypse just happened. The lengths these folks went to has to be seen to be believed. 4,000 attended last year! These events are presented by Dreary & Naughty, Horror Society, and Wicked Whimsy Studio.

The Monster Mash-Up is on both Friday, October 26th and Saturday, October 27th in the Haight Building, 166 Symphony Way, Elgin, IL. The Nightmare on Chicago Street fest is on Saturday, October 27th only, and is located on Chicago Street between Douglas and Villa. Entry points are at Spring/Chicago and Douglas/Highland in Elgin, IL. There will be a trolley going back and forth to these events! Free parking, too!

The Elgin Monster Mash-Up is a large, two-day festival that has just about everything one would expect from a monster-themed fest. There are twenty-five tables with vendors and artists for shopping in the “Bizarre Bazaar,” photo booths, a tarot card reader, guests, movies playing nonstop, live bands, and “Mr. Dark's Gallery of Horror, Halloween and Dark art.” Not to mention all the burlesque dancers, belly dancers, roller derby ladies, and a Zombie Lounge to relax in and sip a ghoulish drink. Free photos with the DuPage County Derby Dames are available both days at the Monster Mash-Up booth, where you can also see a Death Maidens zombie makeup demo by special FX artist Heather Dorsch at 3pm and 7:30pm. Entry is only $5 each day, and kids under age 12 get in free! Two-day pass is $7 and you can get in for $3 with a Nightmare on Chicago Street stamp. Tickets here. Open 5pm-11pm on Friday and 11am-11pm on Saturday. Map

Friday night, see the FRIGHT BITES independent short film competition in the Monster Mash-Up Theater. This is sponsored by Horror Society and yours truly at The Chicago Creepout! First film begins at 5:30pm and they all run consecutively until 10pm. There are live bands playing all night and the Zombie Lounge will have groovy tunes as well. There's also a B-movie marathon all day long on Saturday starting at 11:30am. These classic features include: Carnival of Souls, Plan 9 from Outer Space, People Under the Stairs, The Tingler, Bad Taste, and George Romero's Night of the Living Dead screens at midnight! More bands and burlesque on Saturday as well.

The Nightmare on Chicago Street is a HUGE street fest like no other. (See photo above for a hint!) It runs 6pm-11pm on Saturday and is a 17+ event. Anyone under 17 needs a guardian, and drinkers will be carded very strictly. Live bands, vendors, comedians, sideshow performers, graffiti artists, horror tattoo contest, and SVENGOOLIE will do a meet and greet from 9pm-10:30pm! One very interesting highlight is the 2012 Miss Zombie Pageant, which will have several talent segments just like the real Miss America Pageants! These ladies have been interviewed and chosen over many entrants! There are also two nearby haunted houses! Take advantage of the warming areas and picnic tables! Tickets are $10 at the gate, $7 online.

Tim Solarz at Spacetaste Gallery is doing a neat project with the Elgin Public Museum called SKULLOWEEN 2. Local artists work with resin skulls as a canvas to create ghoulish works of art! The proceeds support the Museum's exhibits. Some of these skulls will be for sale at Monster Mash-Up, or you may visit the gallery at 215 E. Chicago on Saturday from noon to 4pm.

It's difficult to list all the activities going on at these two events, as they keep adding more! It's a huge Halloween bash with something for everyone! I'll leave you with a video from last year's event!
