Weekend Roundup for Weird Events in Chicago

Weekend Roundup for Weird Events in Chicago
Pulgasari

Last weekend was pretty much nonstop chaos in Rosemont, IL. Wizard World Comic Con and Flashback Weekend of Horrors right across the street from one another brought in fans by the thousands. It was a great time. But, as they say, no rest for the wicked!

Friday, August 17th & Saturday, August 18th

Everything is Terrible! and the Chicago Cinema Society co-host a screening of Death Drug (1978) starring Phillip Michael Thomas! This lost “drugsploitation” gem was shelved after Thomas became a star on Miami Vice. (Yes, that Phillip Michael Thomas!) Anti-drug scare films will also be screened, and it's worth going just to experience the bizarre role PMT took on before stardom hit! He plays a singer who dreams of fame, but after getting a record contract, he becomes wildly addicted to PCP and has some freakouts on more than one occasion. 11pm at the Logan Theatre. Scroll down to view the TRAILER at the bottom of this post! Tickets here.

August 17th - August 23rd

Noir City: Chicago - The Music Box Theatre teams up with the Film Noir Foundation for a riveting revival of noir classics presented in 35mm! See full film list and ticket info here.

Friday, August 17th - Sunday, August 19th

The 10th Annual Stargate Sci-Fi Convention will be held at the Westin O'Hare Hotel in Rosemont, IL. Q&A panels with stars, Celebrity Cabaret theatrical event, charity auction, costume contests, Saturday night dessert party, fan music video contest, and more. All info here.

LasRyds 14th Annual Hearse Show in Plainfield, IL. Proceeds go to a charity drive for the Creekside Cares Food Pantry. Dark Carnival theme, vendors, carnival games, charity raffles, costume contest. Accepting donations of non-perishable food items. 10am-6pm. Family-friendly event, free entry. Info here.

Saturday, August 18th

Nosferatu (1922) screens at Doc Films with a 35mm print for only $5 entry! 7pm & 9pm. Info here.

Saturday, August 18th

Finally, saving weirdest for last, Facets Night School presents Pulgasari! A small doll comes alive via blood droplets, becoming a Godzilla-like creature that ingests iron to grow bigger! Host Chris Damen presents “Oh, No, There Goes North Korea: Go Go, PULGASARI and North Korean Cinema.” I recommend reading the insane trivia on the imdb page! As always, show up before midnight for cult trailers, free essay pamphlets, giveaways, and post-screening lecture. $5. Info here.

Good luck with your choices and never fear – plenty of weirdness coming next week, too!
