Season Recap: Chicago State

This is the first of five season recaps that will appear this week. There will be one each day in reverse order of current KenPom ranking. It was also going to be like this during Tracy Dildy’s first season at Chicago State. Benjy Taylor wouldn’t have left the job for an assistant coach position at Hawaii... Read more »

Third annual All-Chicago College Basketball Teams

Thompson was the heart and soul of the Northwestern team that tied the school record with 20 wins and reached the quarterfinals of the NIT. He averaged 15.9 ppg and 4.3 assists per game while finishing 13th in the nation in minutes percentage. He never came off the court and he'll be super difficult for Northwestern to replace next season.
With the season complete it’s time for one of my favorite posts, the All-Chicago College Basketball teams. I’ve taken the five teams around the city and compressed them into the 10 players that stood out the most during the season. There were some tough calls, especially on the second team, but I think these are... Read more »

Postseason Preview: Great West 1st Rd.

Sure, there’s no NCAA Tournament bid at the end of the line, but that doesn’t mean that the teams playing in the Great West Conference Tournament at the UCCU Center in Orem, Utah don’t care. There’s the opportunity to play postseason basketball (in the CIT) and a lot of pride on the line. Basically the... Read more »

Chicago State loses to Olivet Nazarene again

It’s not like Chicago State couldn’t have seen this coming. Last season Olivet Nazarene came to the Jones Convocation Center and walked away with a 75-68 victory. This season the Cougars scheduled the Tigers for Senior Night. The visitors once again weren’t very gracious to their hosts and ruined Chicago State’s final home game with an... Read more »

Photos from Chicago State vs. Olivet Nazarene

It’s Senior Night at the Jones Convocation Center on the campus of Chicago State. The game is still in action, but the first half was so full of it that I created this gallery. The Cougars trailed 42-37 at the half. This after losing to ONU last season. Christian Wall led Chicago State with 12 points... Read more »

Carl Montgomery and Cleveland Melvin win awards

They both have the initials C.M., but Cleveland Melvin and Carl Montgomery are very different. One is a freshman on a Big East team, the other is a senior on a Great West Conference team. Still, they share something in common besides their initials this week as both won weekly awards from their respective conferences.... Read more »

Chicago State evens up Great West record

When I talked to Chicago State’s Tracy Dildy following his team’s Great West opening loss to Utah Valley he told me two things: 1) That his team really needed a victory. 2) That they were going to do better than 2-10 record that Pomeroy projected for his team coming into conference play. Well, tonight the... Read more »

Defense dooms Chicago State in Great West opener

Chicago State came into Saturday’s game against Utah Valley searching for a new beginning after a difficult non-conference schedule that saw the Cougars go 3-13 with just one win over an NCAA Division I squad. The start of Great West Conference play against the Wolverines at the Jacoby Dickens Center offered a chance to begin... Read more »

Carl Montgomery wins Player of the Week in Great West

After a big performance out west Chicago State’s Carl Montgomery was named the Great West Conference’s Player of the Week. Montgomery won the award after a 30 point, five rebound, two block shot night in a 99-72 loss to TCU. He shot 10-18 from the field and 10-14 from the free throw line. Montgomery is... Read more »

Too much turkey, DePaul falls

I’ll have a lot deeper analysis of the style of play that Oliver Purnell plays next week, but here’s a wrap up of some recent college basketball games for Chicago’s teams. Remember, Loyola plays at San Francisco this afternoon at 4 p.m. CT. (Check out these PDF game notes!) Cal State Northridge 88, DePaul 66... Read more »
