The new class of point guards in Chicago

With an up-and-coming new class of point guards looking to stake their place among the colleges in Chicago, it seems as though DePaul sophomore Brandon Young may have the only safe point job in town. Chicago State, UIC, Northwestern and even Loyola are in point guard limbo heading into the 2011-2012 season. Loyola: Courtney Stanley... Read more »

Young drove DePaul and its results

For some background on what’s going on here read this post. A freshman’s performance was was highly correlated to how DePaul played this season. What might surprise you is which one. While Cleveland Melvin obviously had a fantastic freshman season, it appears the play of Brandon Young might have had a bigger impact on the... Read more »

Third annual All-Chicago College Basketball Teams

Thompson was the heart and soul of the Northwestern team that tied the school record with 20 wins and reached the quarterfinals of the NIT. He averaged 15.9 ppg and 4.3 assists per game while finishing 13th in the nation in minutes percentage. He never came off the court and he'll be super difficult for Northwestern to replace next season.
With the season complete it’s time for one of my favorite posts, the All-Chicago College Basketball teams. I’ve taken the five teams around the city and compressed them into the 10 players that stood out the most during the season. There were some tough calls, especially on the second team, but I think these are... Read more »

DePaul's season ends with loss to Connecticut in Big East Tournament

DePaul’s season ended not with a stunning upset at Madison Square Garden, but with the whimper of an overmatched team taking on a talented, NCAA Tournament caliber squad. Connecticut’s 97-71 victory over the Blue Demons was a classic case of talent taking a sledgehammer to desire. The Blue Demons were doomed from the beginning. Having... Read more »

DePaul's Melvin deserves to be Big East Rookie of the Year

At this point it’s pretty obvious that Cleveland Melvin has had an excellent freshman season for DePaul. Since he got injured the Blue Demons haven’t been the same team. Well today the All-Big East teams were announced and Melvin was the lone unanimous vote getter for the Big East All-Rookie Team. We won’t know if... Read more »

St. John's defense chokes DePaul

The past few games the DePaul offense had been steadily progressing, but Wednesday night against St. John’s was a harsh reversal of course. A veteran Red Storm team didn’t allow the Blue Demons to get many open looks inside and clamped down on every DePaul player besides Cleveland Melvin. The result? A 76-51 road loss.... Read more »

DePaul shows progress in loss to Cincinnati

If nothing else the last two games DePaul has lost, to Louisville and Cincinnati, have given Blue Demons fans hope. Hope that things are going to get better. DePaul didn’t play its best game on Tuesday against the Bearcats, but with 0.4 seconds remaining Jimmy Drew had a chance to tie the game and his... Read more »

Blue Demons close again, still waiting for breakthrough

With just a two-day turnaround from its loss to Notre Dame, DePaul went to the Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky and almost pulled off a huge upset. The Blue Demons kept it close the entire way, but in the end the #13 Cardinals made the plays down the stretch to eek out the victory. “Our... Read more »

I'll say this about DePaul

Committing 21 turnovers, like DePaul did in last night’s game against Marquette, is unacceptable. I’m sure Oliver Purnell knows that and I’m sure the players know it too, but it needs to be drilled home. Yes, Marquette plays an aggressive style of basketball, but you still need to hang onto the basketball.  Players whose turnover... Read more »
