I know it's very early, but this morning Carmody Court alerted me to a very interesting development. Northwestern is currently in the NCAA Tournament field according to the general consensus of bracket projections from around the country.
The Bracket Project's Bracket
, which includes projections from 21 different bracketologists, currently has Northwestern in the NCAA Tournament as a #11 seed.
What's interesting about the Wildcats is that the brackets either love or hate Northwestern's chances. The Wildcats have seeds that range from #7 to out of the tournament completely depending on the prognosticator.
Teams that could be on the bubble with Northwestern if the early-season predictions are correct include:
Currently In according to TBPB: BYU, Mississippi State, Missouri State and Xavier.
Currently Out according to TBPB: Maryland, Wake Forest, Louisville, Seton Hall.
Next Out according to TBPB: Oklahoma, Richmond, St. Mary's (CA), South Carolina
Those are names that the Wildcats are going to see again and again mentioned alongside them as they try to do the improbable. Also, while the Bracket Matrix currently has Northwestern as a #11 seed, the The Bracket Project's actual bracket
has the Wildcats as a #9 seed playing against #8 St. John's in St. Louis. I guess fans can dare to dream.
For another perspective, ESPN's Joe Lunardi
currently has Northwestern as one of the first four teams out of the tournament along with BYU, Oklahoma State and Xavier.
