Northwestern is Interesting!

Michael "Juice" Thompson and the Wildcats are a team to watch this season.

Remember when I tried to explain that Northwestern basketball really wasn't boring? And that people should watch? While now there's justification from The Dagger (a Yahoo! sports blog) which named the Wildcats the 62nd "most interesting" team in the country.

They've got some good logic behind their argument too. Lets look at all three in a little bit more depth.

1. Kevin Coble - He gets a bit of a back-handed compliment, "On a team with no real stars, Coble is the next best thing, a
slashing, creative forward almost perfectly tailored to the Wildcats'
style." Of course since, Coble couldn't even make the Wooden Award Watch List, I guess there's some merit to the statement. After averaging 15 points and (almost) 5 rebounds per game last season Coble deserved to be on the list. That's not the best reason to watch though.
The best reason to watch Coble play basketball is ability to make it seem like you're actually playing a game of H-O-R-S-E. He hits some absolutely unbelievable shots during the course of a game.

2. Chicago - I couldn't agree more with The Dagger's point about Northwestern being the hub of Chicago College Basketball - at least this season. With Loyola, UIC and Chicago State all rebuilding around young teams and DePaul stuck in the basement of the Big East, Northwestern will be the team to watch this season. Also, the Wildcats will play Notre Dame in the Chicago Invitational Challenge at the UIC Pavilion.

The Wildcats also have a decidedly Chicago feel to their roster. While Coble is from Scottsdale, Arizona, Chicagoland locals Michael Thompson, Jeremy Nash, Drew Crawford, Jeff Ryan and John Shurna all will play big roles this season.

3. NCAA Tournament - Oh yes, the big gorilla in the room. The season is still more than a month away, but the Wildcats are already firmly on the NCAA Tournament bubble. Everything Northwestern does this season will be scrutinized by thousands of fans of Mid-Major programs, other bubble teams and even the rest of the Big Ten. The Wildcats certainly have a shot.

There's a lot of excitement over the Northwestern men's basketball program right now... Just check out the splash page on NUSports.com.

On a side note. If you'd like to read more about Evan Eschmeyer, or why I named him the sixth best player in Chicago College Basketball history, you can check it out here.
