Lindy's College Basketball Predictions

CSU's Montgomery received praise from Lindy's.

Every once in a while before the season starts I'm going to be taking a look at what the college basketball preview magazines have to say about the teams in the Chicago area. The first up on this list is Lindy's 2009-2010 College Basketball Preview. DePaul's Mac Koshwal and Illinois' Demetri McCamey are on the regional cover.

The magazine gives a lot of love to Chicago State's Carl Montgomery, but what other players and teams should Chicago fans be watching?
A quick rundown of all the teams and players:

Lindy's does overall position rankings in the country. Two Chicago players made the list:

  • Northwestern's Kevin Coble is the #14 Power Forward in the country. They call him a "sneaky-smart scorer."
  • DePaul's Mac Koshwal is the #21 Center in the country. But the caption sums it up, "He's plenty good, but also pretty much alone on Blue Demons."

Then there are conference rankings, predictions and accolades:

Teams:

  • DePaul is ranked 16th in the Big East behind Rutgers, South Florida and Providence. The short prediction isn't cheery. "Maybe DePaul won't go 0-18 in the league again, but this still looks like a last-place team."
  • Northwestern is ranked 8th in the Big Ten, just behind Minnesota and Wisconsin and in front of Penn State, Indiana and Iowa. "The Wildcats inch closer to the program's first NCAA berth, but settle for their second consecutive NIT."
  • UIC is ranked 5th in the Horizon League while Loyola-Chicago is ranked 7th. The team between them? UW-Green Bay.
  • Chicago State is picked 5th in the 7-team Great West Conference.

Individuals:

  • Coble is on their preseason All-Big Ten Second Team.
  • UIC's Robo Kreps is on the preseason All-Horizon League Second Team.
  • Chicago State's Carl
Montgomery is in the All-Great West First Team. He's also the early
candidate for Player of the Year in the brand new conference. Among
other Big West honors he received: Best Rebounder, Best Defender and Best NBA
    Prospect.

  • These forecasts are meaningless, basically because they are put together with outdated information. I believe these articles are written early in the summer.

For example, no way UIC would be picked for 5th place if the writer knew that Tori Boyd and Rob Eppinger (2 projected starters) would no longer be on the team. Several other players were kicked off the team. A more likely finish would 9th or 10th place.
