Bulls @ Mavericks at 8:30 on ESPN

The Bulls roll into Dallas to play their third game in four nights and the final game in the Texas triangle while the Mavs should be used to dealing with athletic point guards after playing a home and home with the New Orleans Hornets in their past two games.

Much like against the Spurs, the Bulls need to try to ramp up the pace.  The Bulls match up better against the Mavericks though because the Mavericks don't have the same interior presence that the Spurs do as Nowitzki is a dominant scorer, but isn't necessarily going to beat you up physically.
Keys to the game

Derrick needs to dominate
The Mavericks have tremendous depth and very good players and backups at virtually all positions.  The one thing they really lack is anyone who has a hope of staying in front of Derrick Rose.   Rose needs to be in all out attack mode this game and needs to do damage at the basket rather than settling for jumpers.  Jason Kidd and Jason Terry can't keep up while Jose Barea doesn't have the size to match up.

Omer Asik can make a big impact on this game
Taj Gibson has played poorly and, quite frankly, is no match for Dirk Nowitzki on defense.  Joakim Noah, however, is a great match for Nowitzki on the defensive end of the court.  The problem is that Gibson likely gets bowled over by Haywood / Chandler on the interior glass if you pull that switch.  That's where Omer comes in.   Throw Noah on Dirk and Omer on Chandler/Haywood, and the Bulls should match up well in the front court defensively.

Luol Deng needs to stay fresh for the fourth

What is it about coaches and overplaying Luol Deng?   It's like his middle name is 'security blanket'.   He's not killing guys out there or doing anything that ever makes you think "no way we can take Deng out!", and yet both Vinny and Thibodeau are reluctant ever to take him out of the game.

The problem is Deng wears down in games and over the season. He's not a player that should play more than 34 minutes a night unless he's completely terrorizing the opponents like his 40 point outing earlier this season.

This is especially true over the past few nights where Deng hasn't shot the ball well and Korver/Brewer have played at a high level.  Get Deng some rest in the middle parts of this game so that he's ready for the fourth and doesn't break down in January.

Deny the corner three
Dallas has quality offensive players, and they're going to get their share of open looks, so if you give up an open three make sure it's from the wing and not the corner and try to force them into long twos when you can.

Final thoughts
Much like against the Spurs, it's a game I feel the Bulls are underdogs in but have a shot to win.  They Mavs are an older team, and if the Bulls can push the tempo up then they can find some success.  They'll have better luck doing so against  the Mavs than the Spurs given that the Mavs are probably a bit more free wheeling by nature.

The Bulls will likely require a big performance out of Rose to stay in this game, and Taj Gibson needs to come out of hibernation and deliver a strong performance.  As noted above, I'd love to see Asik more in this game, but we'll have to wait and see if Thibs is think of the same adjustment.

  • We dont have a good history against Dallas but we haven't had a player like Drose is this year since 98

Rose hasn't showed any signs of slowing down but we all know some players have games where they are just off! I dunno why I just have a weird feeling after he has scored 33 in back to back games!

    I really hope I'm wrong!

  • Thats why I am sum what against getting melo. I feel that he'd take away from Rose and hinder is development.

Like in the nationals he was passive because he played with so many good players he would just give up the ball instead of trying to create his own shot.

I just think it could be something similar to what happened in miami

But all that being said I would take Melo in a heart beat

  • In reply to UtahBullsFan:

If the Bulls can trade Deng, Gibson,JJ and Charlott's 1st rounder and get Melo, the Bulls become an elite team. With a starting five of Rose, Melo, Noah, Boozer and Brewer this team would become an immeadite legitimate Eastern Conference champion contender.Gar/Pax should make it happen

  • In reply to UtahBullsFan:

I have a feeling Deng plays more minutes on Dirk than Noah does.

  • In reply to UtahBullsFan:

Why do they call it a "home and home series"? It should be a home & away. I mean when you play in a 7 game series you don't say home, home, home, home , home

  • In reply to ChiRy:

    My thoughts exactly.

  • It's hard to take Deng out because he's your utility piece, he fits well with whatever else you throw out there around him. Also right now he's your backup 4, like it or not.

I in general support the idea that he's been playing too much, but against Dirk, he's a guy that can guard him. I don't mind us limiting Gibson and using Noah & Deng for big minutes at the 4 this game. We're better off cutting his minutes at the 3 by playing Korver/Brewer more.

  • This will be another game where the Bulls shouldn't try to run and gun with Dallas cause they have good efficient scorers just like the Spurs. A good defensive and rebounding effort and descent perimeter play for 48 minutes will be needed from the Bulls in order to win this game. The Bulls didn't play last night so maybe they can get the win.

  • agreed, you would only likely be an elite team on paper

  • LOST & FOUND:

Can I someone locate Taj Gibson's shot and Keith Bogan's offense before tonight's game?

    They need to SHOW-UP!!!

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Mark my words Mappy, Taj Gibson will not have 3 poor shooting performances in a row. As far as Keith Bogans, I'm hoping he doesn't play much.

  • In reply to jgingeri:

    guru,

JEALOUSY is your best quality...that's pretty sad.

    QUESTION:

Is there no one on this Bulls' team MAN ENOUGH to take it strong to the basket?

    3 FTA's in the 1st half...PATHETIC!!!

  • In reply to MrHappy:

bring in JJ, tell him to take it to the rack!

  • In reply to MrHappy:

20 of our 39 points in the paint, that's pretty good. You can't get to the line unless you get calls.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

I have to watch the horse shit of a crew on ESPN, got league pass but its blacked on on national tv games. They are TERRIBLE. Keep going off on these tangents & long winded stories . Talk about the game you bags of dueche!

  • In reply to MrHappy:

anyone hear the comment by Thibs after the first? He said we need to stop fouling Dirk, or to stop appearing to foul him. Love it.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Thibs is my guy but he needs to be aware of this. Vinny was able to get away with playing Deng in ridiculous minutes, well not exactly since he did get fired. But I'm saying, as far as game-planning goes, it didn't hurt our chances to win last year. The huge, huge difference with this year's Deng can be summed up with one word, THREES. You can't wear down a player, especially in close games, that you will depend on to get those key three pointers in the 4th. Threes are affected by fatigue more than any other shot, simply because they are the longest. Players shift away from shooting fundamentals as they grow weary. I know a lot of people will say it's his injury prone body and debilitating defense that should discourage Thibs from playing him so much, but in today's reality, it's his three point efficiency.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Bogans? How about playing Brewer more? Gibs need to shoot better, and use his post game more too

  • In reply to MrHappy:

If It's true about Boozer... January huh???... the Bulls better make a trade come Dec.15th or shortly after cause someone will eventually wear down and get injured. And a bit off topic, did anyone see theMiami Heats ad to get fans to show up to the games on time and not to leave early. All I can say is that teams fanbase is a F***ING joke. If anyone wants to see the ad, go to YouTube and type in Miami fanup and you will see what I am sayin... I'm just sayin.

  • In reply to Reese1:

I live in Florida (Northwest not Miami), thats just how these fans are. All bout their college football here. I go to watch the Bulls in Orlando, & if the game is not close the fans always bail & we sneak upfront to the good seats. They are always coming in late too. Its pathetic.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

I don't have a good feeling the Bulls are going to win this game for the following reason: against good teams last year on that Western road win trip both Taj and Joakim played well especially being active blocking shots.

But as I said after the San Antonio game IMO(though his numbers were solid) Noah looked sleepy eyed/sick/sleep deprived(I'm assuming he's not partying too much), and Taj looks slow as hell, and I think his plantar fasciitis is bothering him again.

If Noah comes out of whatever is causing his malaise, and Taj can at least realize that shooting confidence comes from inside out meaning from scoring around the basket or getting to the line(as he was doing) to loosen up the pressure/get into a rythm as they say for mid range and extended jumpers he may come out of his 'slump'.

So if those two guys suddenly come back to their excellent play, and Derrick continues to score 25ppg and up/attacking with team D being solid then and only then will they win. And my feeling is Jo, Taj or both will continue to somewhat struggle/not suddenly/miraculously go back to their excellent level of play. But that's just partly my gut feeling/intuition. Hopefully they will prove me wrong.

By the way, Derrick has just looked awesome driving, and when he gets Booz "back?" and if Taj and Jo can consistently bring it then this team could be damn tough in the near future.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Melo's wife: 'I would be happy to stay in Denver'

Yeah, you would be happy with that extra 10 mil a year woman

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Did the refs disallow Noah's last second bucket to end the 1st quarter???

  • In reply to Edward:

Yeah looks that way, it's gone from the play by play.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

I think it is safe to say Taj showed up

  • I completely agree with Doug's comments about Thibs playing Luol Deng too many minutes. Deng is obviously gassed at the end of games and it hurts his efficiency. The same applies Noah and Rose, but to a lesser extent.

Thibs is still learning what rotations and bench players he can rely on and is erring by playing the starters too much. It's hurting the team. I hope Thibs figures it out soon, and not just after Boozer comes back. I'm confident he will.

  • In reply to Edward:

Deng has to play a lot of minutes cause no one else besides Rose that's in the starting line up can score at a somewhat efficient rate. Asking Deng to score at an efficient rate is asking too much. The Bulls don't need to try to quicken the pace cause the Mavs has good shooters and the Bulls would not be able to keep up not unless they played some tight D and as of right now... the defense hasn't been consistent. Yes the Mavs has older players but the season is still early and I wouldn't test them by getting into track meet with Kidd throwing up lobs to Chandler and Dirk getting into rhythm and killing the Bulls with long jumpers and the 3 ball. Trying to run with Dallas in Dallas would not be a good idea...IMO.

  • In reply to Reese1:

Agree we can't get into a foot race with Dallas.

But I do not agree that its too much to ask of Deng to be an efficient scorer. In fact, I don't think its too much to ask of any player to be an efficient scorer. Noah is a very efficient scorer 53%, as is Taj 51%. Being efficient at scoring is a matter of shot selection, and your ability to finish those shots. Right now Deng is shooting 41% from the field and 39% from threes, excellent 3 point efficient wise, and ok overall. I expect Deng to get better from inside the arc as he learns to balance his inside game with the three point game.

I think what you're really saying, which I agree with, is that you can't count on Deng to create his own shot. You can't count on Deng to lead the team to score when you really need it.

People tend to use the phrase scoring efficiency in the wrong context. Tons of bench players across the league have excellent scoring efficiency ratings because they know when they are in a position that gives them a good chance to score, its really not a huge indicator of being elite. Now if you are the player on a team, like Derrick Rose, that is taking tons of shots from all different angles, then having high efficiency becomes much more impressive as you are forced to take difficult low percentage shots at times.

  • In reply to jgingeri:

True enough but the Bulls are still prone to fall behind if they don't slow the pace of the game and play some tough defense. I think if they can slow up Kidd and Terry they will do ok. Dirk more than likely will get his points regardless so slowing up J Kidd and J Terry will be the key to hopefully getting a win.

    DENG THAT'S ALOT OF

Maybe coach thibbs is planning on trading deng for melo or someone else by the deadline n maybe that's y he's playing deng so much...he figures he might as well use up deng as much as he can ......its a win win for coach thibbs, thibbs gets production from deng n dengs value goes up.....I'm probably wrong but it just doesn't make sense to play deng so many min. wen everyone knows deng breaks down towards the end of the season wen being over played.....wat y'all think?

  • In reply to Reese1:

I thought that why we brought Korver in, to provide some scoring at small forward, when Deng is out.

  • Doug wants Omer Asik to Start

So Doug wants Omer Asik to replace Taj Gibson and start for this game for defensive purposes.

Normally my wife and I watch movies on Friday night (old school kind of guy). But perhaps I can persuade her to watch some Bulls basketball.

  • In reply to rkraneis:

I am not sure that he is suggesting that he starts, but that might not be a bad idea, except for the fact that Asik would likely foul out early in the 3rd quarter.

I thought that the TT should have gone to Asik and Noah early in the Spurs game, and at the end of the 4rth quarter.
Asik held his own against Duncan, and Noah should have dominated Blair and McDyess.

  • In reply to rkraneis:

brewer need to step up big in this game as well and had anybody else noticed how slow korver is at getting space off the screens. that why he really haven't done much.even when boozer do come back when are still going to need a wing player asap

  • In reply to rkraneis:

Wtf!!!!! S. Smith is saying that he doesn't expect Boozer back in the lineup until a few weeks into December! Does he not know that a few weeks= a month!

SO ACCORDING TO SAM SMTIH BOOZER WILL NOT BE RETURNING UNTIL JANUARY

  • In reply to UtahBullsFan:

My God what a Puss! I broke my foot & played 4 weeks later. Of course I don't have 5% body fat, but still, its his f***ing hand! F***in wrap it up & get out there puss pot!

  • In reply to rkraneis:

Dont listen to what Sam Smith says....he never knows anything. lol

I really hate having Dung on this team lol Last game i saw him barely fall down and he gets up limping. Hes unathletic, injury prone an i cant wait to get him out of here. I would trade Dung,Taj,James Johnson an Charlottes 1st for Melo in a heartbeat. Once you get Melo all you have to do is figure it out.

  • I do not like Melo's personality and character in terms of how it will affect the Bulls excellent team chemistry.

The next biggest argument against acquiring Melo(even if Denver relents on taking Deng) is that he and Boozer may not compliment each other well as a starting front court.

As I have said before, Boozer is going to be the Bulls Melo when he returns. He will be the go to scorer in the half court. It is impossible to judge what kind of team the Bulls really are until Boozer is back.

Obviously, most people would take Melo over Boozer, but maybe Boozer is a better fit for the Bulls.

Theoretically, would you rather have Boozer and Deng or Melo and Taj as your starting front court.

  • DENG THAT'S ALOT OF MIN.*

Idk how I let that wrd slip lol

  • Deng appears to be every coaches security blanket, but it is killing his game in the second half.

He should come out at the end of the first and 3rd quarters to utilize the quarter breaks, and return in the middle of the 2nd and 4rth, well rested and fresh.

I hated Del Bimbo for his overuse of Deng, and this is by far my biggest gripe with TT so far.

He needs to wise up on Deng, and I believe that he will, especially when Boozer returns.

  • I agree I'd like to see a little more Watson, and a lot less Bogans.

It is time to start Brewer, and go with a 3 guard rotation of Rose, Brewer, and Watson, with a little Korver thrown in.

Bogans needs to hang out with Thomas, and Johnson on the DNP, CD part of the bench.

  • PERIMETER SHOOTING is killing the Bulls once again... Deng the main guy not showing up.

  • In reply to Reese1:

This is getting ridiculous... no one else can score but Rose, absolutely cannot have this happen over and over again.

  • In reply to Reese1:

Posted on November 19, 2010 3:13 PM... This is what I said earlier and the Bulls are proving me right.

  • In reply to Reese1:

I guess rose has to draw blood to get a foul called

  • I swear if Bogans doesn't lose his starting job after this that he has pictures of Thibs like Duhon had of Skiles.

  • In reply to DontLetsStart:

yeah, I don't care about respecting Bogans, or caring about his feelings, Brewer needs to be the starter now

  • I know the pace is good but the falling behind part is the problem with bad shooting

  • Rose has to draw blood to get a dman foul call! Come on NBA! He is getting hand raped nearly every drive to the hoop!

  • Rose will contiue to get beat up until thr refs learn to call the foul for him... just like last year.

  • Dirk gonna get his it's the other guys they need to shut down. This is very frustrating knowing who they have to play next.

  • Totally agree, tough D needs to be played

  • Dam good come back... Tighten up on D and they could steal this 1

  • Finally started hitting our FTs and threes and we're on a bit of a run.

  • DEFENSE AND CONTROL THE BOARDS!!!

  • When did Chandler become a good FT shooter???

  • GIBSON...WOW!!!

  • Who needs Korver when you have Taj. :)

  • Yeah they are, this is where the Bulls could be dangerous with another scorer.

  • Korver got bumped on that 3 and no call.

  • Taj has really made up for his bad 2 games tonight.

  • Dont know about that taking Korver out

  • In reply to Reese1:

He'll be back when we have the ball.

  • In reply to Reese1:

Less than a minute up 3 lets hold on here.

  • In reply to Reese1:

These refs man are gonna get someone seriously hurt cause they dont want to call the foul for the Bulls.

  • In reply to Reese1:

Good character win for the Bulls. Tues. they should have some confidence for the CHAMPS.

  • In reply to Reese1:

LOL more inability to inbound the ball.

  • In reply to Reese1:

Really great win, I love the way we fought even when Dallas looked like they might run away with it. Noah & Gibson were huge on the boards and really saved the day.

  • In reply to Reese1:

    HELP WANTED:

This Bulls team still needs a STARTING SHOOTING GUARD.

    Keith Bogans - 0/5 for 0 points
    Ronnie Brewer - 2/4 for 4 points

    * Bye...Bye...Dickey Johnson.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Yes, that is the Bulls biggest need. Perhaps more than Carmelo, though I know you don't want to hear that.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

As good as Rose has looked late in games, he doesn't look like the guy to finish a game. He can play a big 4th quareter in rythym, but in a super tight game where he needs to make one play he doesnt look so hot.

Great resilience though. For a while it looked like the Spurs game all over again. Nice to see everyone fight right down to the end. 2-1 !!! I dont think Mr Happy is going to get his 10-5, but

Its because every opponent knows Rose will take the last shot so they double/triple team him.

  • In reply to bcz1980:

With Bulls winning 2 of 3 in the Texas triangle Derrick Rose has a shot at Eastern conference player of the week again!

  • In reply to MrHappy:

finishing November above .500 looks like a lock. When the schedule came out i predicted the Bulls would be 8-7 at the end of Nov - and that was before Booz went down. 8-7 without him just goes to show how good we should be once he comes back.

  • In reply to Reese1:

In addition to Rose, of course, as Taj and Noah go, so go the Bulls. When those two play well they give Rose the help he needs to get the win even if Deng doesn't have a good night. That Rose/Watson back court looks good against small back courts.

  • In reply to Reese1:

Taj finally has come back and the bench brought a big spark to this group. The bench has been playing well on the road. Hope they can continue.

  • He pulled a Dwight Howard.

Wonder what Rose said to him when Dirk was at the line after the fould by Gibson that ended Taj's night

  • one of those nights for Taj
