Bulls @ Kings 9pm on WGN - Rose's status, unknown

The Bulls finish up the road trip in Sacramento, a game which ordinarily would be an automatic win.   However, with Derrick Rose's status for the game unknown, the outcome becomes more intriguing.

C.J. Watson stepped up big against the Nuggets, but it's probably not reasonable to expect another massive scoring outburst from Watson.   The Kings, as a team, aren't particularly good, and if the Bulls play solid defense then they should be able to get the win any way.

For the purpose of this preview, I'm going to assume Derrick Rose is out, because a healthy Rose should make this a near automatic win.
Keys to the game

Play with the same energy against Sacramento as against Denver.   This won't be an easy task as the team is playing it's fourth game in five nights and is short handed, perhaps missing Gibson and Rose on top of Boozer.   However, the Bulls need to scrap and hustle to win without their two best shot creators and two of their top three interior players.

Play fundamental basketball.  The margin for error without the best offensive players on the team is low, so the Bulls can't afford to give up possessions on turnovers or allow second chance points.   The Kings aren't a great defensive rebounding team, but they are a strong offensive rebounding team, so the Bulls need to focus on the defensive glass.

Know your personnel.
Only Caspi and Garcia are shooting threes with any volume or accuracy for the Kings, so make sure to get a hand in their face, but play the drive for the other Kings.

Knock down your shots.  Kyle Korver, I'm looking at you.   As a team, the Bulls did a quality job of finding open looks against the Nuggets, but they didn't do a great job of knocking them down.   Korver in particular was bad, but the team as a whole shot 20% from the three point line and 39.8% from the field.

Final thoughts
If Rose can't go, this game will be a very stiff test for the Bulls.  They're finishing up a long road trip, the rotation is shortened due to injuries, they are missing their two best offensive creators, and they are coming off an emotional loss.  A win tonight would be a tremendous boost for the team as well as giving them their first winning record on this road trip since the Jordan era.

Thank god, we really need a win to make yesterday's effort a net positive on top of Phoenix, rather than totally deflating.

  • In reply to adocarbog:

Who needs Derrick Rose anyway? Not the Bulls. They have James Johnson, right?

  • In reply to MrHappy:

What we need is a mad scientist to transplant Scal's brain (whose body just can) into JJ's head (whose body can but does not know how to) and we could have a good player between the two.

  • In reply to adocarbog:

As long as we're going that route, can we use Kurt Thomas' brain?

  • In reply to adocarbog:

I always wanted to do that experiment with Tyrus. I'm trying to think over the brain I wanted to use, but does it even matter?

  • The kind of game that makes the opposing team & all their fans want to kick your ass & wipe that smile off your face, but they just can't! Ha, that is just what the docotor ordered after last nights debacle & game winning mulligan by Melo.

I hope John Lucas somehow can totally redeem himself too, poor kid.

  • Hey Doug, I dont know if you caught This Week in the NBA on Thanksgiving but both Kenny and Charles chose their predictions for each Conference and what caught me off guard was Charles chose the Bulls to finish 2nd behind the Magic. He even predicted the Bulls to reach the Finals. Its funny because Charles usually hates on the Bulls but they seemed to have growed on him. Kenny had them finishing 5th and at most reaching the Conference Finals because of their inexperience.

Bulls vs The Lakers in the NBA Finals, during the 20th anniversary of the original Bulls vs. Lakers matchup, sounds about right

  • In reply to argie2333:

WOW!!! THEY MAKE THEM PLAY THE FINAL .4 SECONDS OF THE 1ST QUARTER, BUT LAST NIGHT AFTER THE MELO MULLIGAN, WE COULDN'T GET .4 SECONDS WHEN THERE OBVIOUSLY WAS TIME LEFT, AT THE END OF THE GAME????

COME ON NBA OFFICIALS! YOU SUCK!!!

  • In reply to argie2333:

doesnt look like aan automatic win yet

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

not at all, doesn't even look like a win

Sacramento playing like they haven't all year

  • In reply to ChiRy:

i guess doug was feeling lucky because of his CJ watson goes for 30 prediction and took a crack at this one

  • In reply to ChiRy:

You know, right now it's 71-65, and I really have no doubt that the Bulls are gonna end up winning this game, but damn this is ugly, Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, wearing red is having a good game so far tonight...

  • In reply to ChiRy:

The defense really picked up in the 3rd, but we're still not getting quality shots on the majority of our possessions. Rose is forcing things and getting a lot of his shots rejected.

Big play at the end, in which Noah got hacked on the arm going in for a layup, no call, and a technical for Noah. Possible 3 point swing there. Down 7 going into the 4th.

  • In reply to ChiRy:

Uh-oh! Did I see Noah just do one of those Kevin Garnett "pound your chest to show how much heart you have" moves? No, no, no, no, no, Joakim!!!

  • In reply to ChiRy:

This is like pulling teeth!! Way to take the charge Kyle. Since your shot isn't falling tonight, you'd better do SOMEthing to justify being on the court.

  • In reply to ChiRy:

Poor Paul Westphal, he looks like the ghost of the guy who coached the Suns back in the '90's...
WHOA Noah, flip up that layup for an 8 point lead!!

  • In reply to ChiRy:

OK..I got a name for that ridiculous 2-hand dunk Rose specializes in:
    The Bullwhip!

  • In reply to ChiRy:

I haven't seen the Bulls put the clamps on a squad like this in a while.

  • In reply to ChiRy:

Whatever Thibs told them at half time it worked, really smashed them in the second half with defense. Once the easy points dried up the Kings started taking bad shots and turning the ball over.

Great work to get the win, hope CJ is OK, looked like maybe he dislocated a finger or something when he went off.

  • In reply to ChiRy:

Hell of a win by the Bulls but these leads that they let other teams build in the first half needs to stop. They are using too much energy trying to get back in the game and the season is too long for that. Don't need no other major injuries from being too tired.

  • In reply to ChiRy:

And 4-3 on the circus trip, sure it could have been even better but I would have taken 4-3 over this stretch before the season started no questions asked.

Lets get Boozer worked into this lineup and start smashing teams.

  • In reply to ChiRy:

Yeah!! Wasn't that something, the way Brian Scalabrine put the whole team on his back and....
Whoa, somebody musta put something in my drink.
Anyway, VERY happy to see the win tonight. VERY happy to see the Bulls stay disciplined and just keep running the offense, pick it up on defense and watch an inferior team fall apart. Ronnie Brewer deserves a lot of credit for playing some TOUGH D. DRose, Joakim, and Luol had their "normal" games. Taj was playing in tough luck tonight, picked up those early fouls and could never get going. Look forward to see Boozer start getting some minutes in the next few games.
Even though they farted around for 2 1/2 quarters or so, a very satisfying ending to a terrific road trip. I'm liking this team MORE and MORE.

  • In reply to ChiRy:

It's definitely about time for Brewer to start. He only had 8 points, but 10 rebounds and 3 assists, and really helped push the ball up the floor ahead of Rose when he had position. I understand if Thibs is waiting for Boozer to come back, but please, he needs to be starting. Deng and Rose are stretching the floor some, and Boozer will help, too.

  • In reply to msalivar:

I know 3 assists isn't much, but he was facilitating ball movement and getting guys easy looks when we were forcing some horrible shots.

  • In reply to argie2333:

i know the bulls have been making a lot of comebacks but why the hell are they falling so far behind in every game

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

From what I've seen so far this game, poor defense and poor shot selection seem to be the culprits.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

everyone loves a comeback win, but as we saw last night you'll be lucky to win half those games

  • In reply to Ufficio:

the bulls must be jsut about the worst team in the leaue at defending 3s

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

Statistically they're right at the league average.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

1.10 AM Where im at, will find out what hapenned tomorrow

  • In reply to Ufficio:

smells like another sub .500 circus trip

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

oh yea, Happy's 10-5 prediction's already in the trash

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

    ixon,

If you could read, Doug and I discussed that after the NYC game.

    I believe I changed it to 9-6.

It could have been better, if Rose didn't sit out the 4th vs. the Knicks or the entire game vs. the Nuggets.

    The CLUELESS still amaze me.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

if you could read ixon...then you would have already known Mr. Chumpy is a big time deuche

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

Yet another game where the Bulls fall behind by double-digits.

    That's a BAD TREND.

Nice D in the 4th Quarter and DROSE deciding to MAN-UP and play saved their arses.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

you're not qualified to be telling Rose when he is & isn't maning up bro

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

    SIDE NOTE:

7 DNP's for JJ and counting. He sure is earning his cash and that extension.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

how deep exactly do you want the rotation?

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

    Nick Young:

    21pts ob 8/15 shooting, 3/4 from 3

    uh-oh!

  • In reply to ChiRy:

Yeah, but he didn't hit the game winner.

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

Why can't the Bulls play like they did in the 4th, all night long?

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

    horrible, just horrible

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

    its absolutely maddening

  • In reply to ixonflex69:

The defense is just all-around terrible this game. The Kings are getting either an easy layup or uncontested jumper every trip down the floor.

  • Mitchell,
My sentiments exactly. Except for the Golden State home win (and, I guess, the Portland game), I don't think you could call any win this year "easy"...certainly not a laugher (except for GS), and boy wouldn't that be a nice way to close out an above .500 "circus trip." I would hope that Noah if no one else will remind the Bulls what happened when the Kings played at the UC last year...@!$##.

  • Really hope this game isn't a let down, would suck after all the hard games we've played to blow the easiest one on the trip.

  • Deng really being aggressive & taking it to the rack the last couple of games! I like it!

  • Looks like the refs are trying to take this one over, lot of ticky-tacs

  • We should not be down to the Kings here. Even on the 4th game in 5, even on the road, even without Booze, we should be dominating them
