Taj Gibson - I've been shooting threes

I caught up with Taj Gibson at media day, and in one of the most interesting answers to a question I got on the day, Taj Gibson said he's working on becoming a stretch four.   While he said it's still likely a year away, he's been working hard on extending his range out to the three point line.

You had a breakout rookie season, what do you expect this year?
"Bring
the energy, the same way, I'll be behind booz.  I'm looking forward to
learning from him in here in practice and getting better."

How's your foot doing?
"It feels a lot better, spent the whole summer rehabbing just getting it back.  It feels way stronger than last year."

So how long did you have to rest this summer before getting to really work on your game?
"I had to rest mostly the whole summer.  I stayed in Chicago, in the training room here, took most of the summer off until late and focused on rehabbing."

What are your first thoughts on Thibodeau?

"He's like a drill sargeant.  Knows every small detail on the basketball court,a nd he's so easy to talk to and learn from."

How will things be different this year under Thibodeau compared to last year under VDN?

"I think it's going to be a lot more crisp this year.  I can tell from the mini camps that everything is going to be real crisp.  We go at each other really hard.  He wants the players to reallyunderstand it, so I think we're going to be a lot better and guys are coming back better because we've been working out together."

Have you gotten to see the scheme yet or will that have to wait for practice?
"The scheme is really up tempo, fast paced, we're going to add some things and I'm looking forward to seeing it."

What have you worked on this off-season?
"I've been shooting threes actually.  Last season Vinny and his staff wanted to see me step out to 18 and eventually three point range.  This coaching staff is helping me work on threes, and this staff is helping me work on it."

How's your three look?  Are we going to see it this year?

"It looks good, but it's still probably a year away.  They changed my whole jump shooting form to a new, easier, quicker form.  i'm looking forward to using it."

Are they working you in at Center or just Power Forward?

"In some of the drills I've played some Center a bit, and whatever he (Thibodeau) needs me to play I'm open."

What's your overall take on the off-season?
"It's all basketball.  Lots of trade rumors, free agency stuff, but we've got lots of good guys on our team.  I look at our guys now and we have a lot of depth all the way down the bench."

Other observations:

I'd say he definitely appears to have bulked up since I've last seen him in person, which was probably a couple weeks into last season, but he looked definitely looked like he added some muscle though that could have taken place during the season as much as the off-season.

It's interesting to see that Taj switched up his shooting form this year, and I'll be curious to see what results that brings.  It can take quite a bit of time to really work in a new form, but if Taj can work his range out to 18 feet or even the three point line, he'd be awesome talent.

  • Thibs sounding like a REAL coach...boy I sure hopes so bc we have been missing that for a while here. If everyone improves incrementally with better coaching we can easily win 10 more games! Can't wait for this season 2start!

  • Doug...you make the offseason tolerable. Thanks so much. Dude if you are ever in NYC, let me know. Expensive steak dinner on me!

  • If Thibs can give the green light for Taj to shoot during blow-outs...that might help him.

  • Wow...Taj could turn into a really really good ball player. If he can develope a 3 ball....he could be like a young Donyell Marshall. He is probably right though...hes probably a year away with it.

  • Doug, did anyone ask Taj if he's been working on his pull-up jumper? That is one area from last year where he looked much less comfortable than just catch-and-shoot.

Taj seems such a good person and coachable. I wish great things for him.

  • Meanwhile, media day in New York continues to prove how the Bulls were sagacious in trading away Eddy Curry. He is out of shape and will not be with the Knicks for 4-6 weeks!

I thought that Curry was nothing more than a big dumb slug when he was with the Bulls and a huge proponent of dumping him, he has been nothing short of human garbage since he got to the Knicks, he is an embarassment to the human race.

Curry proves my point that a person can indeed be simply too stupid to be a successfull NBA player. While he may not be as bad as Curry, I feel the same way about the dearly departed Tyrus Thomas.

  • In reply to BigWay:

Almost forgot, he has to be the biggest waste of $60 million in the history of the world.

  • In reply to BigWay:

Just listening to the players really emphasizes how pathetically undercoached the Bulls have been for the past 2 seasons, it almost seems like a miracle that they managed to play .500 ball with a coach like Del Bimbo.

Taj is such a likeable guy, I hope that he has a long and productive career with the Bulls.

  • In reply to BigWay:

Can you say Lamar Odom? Haha. Don't we wish.

    Sam Smith article

Luol Deng has been working hard on his 3pt range at the berto center n has been hitting 20-25 shots from the corner of the 3 pt line....

I know its just just a shoot around but Sounds like luol I'd improving a lil.....anyone who can hit 20-25 3 pointers in a row consistently is bound to improve ....its looking good for us bulls fans...sounds like Deng is focused on improving his 3pt shot n so fa far it sounds like its paying off...let's go bully's ...

Meant to say Deng has been hitting 20-25 shots in a row from the corner 3

Wow. You add a three-ball to that crossover and Taj is gonna become a very dangerous man.

  • Nice! Looks like the Bulls are looking in-house to address their 3-pt needs. So far I've heard of Rose, Deng (via Sam Smith article) and now Taj working on their 3s. Should see some improvement this season and hopefully a big difference next season.

    In reply to jamatokwu:

Definitely couldn't hurt to have our guys working on it. Deng needs to shoot it consistently. But with Rose at this point he may not need to shoot it all the time but he needs to be reasonably confident shooting one in endgame situations.

  • In reply to Redwhitenblack:

I'd like to see Rose and Deng avg'ing about 2 attempts per game each. Get some consistency and intention to make 3s. If teams know they can make 3s at about 35% a clip, they have to prepare for that. These past few years neither has been anything close to a threat to shoot let alone make them.
