Bulls hire Scottie Pippen as a team ambassador

From a Bulls.com press release:

The Chicago Bulls announced on July 15 that team legend and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen has agreed to rejoin the organization as an ambassador.

Scottie Pippen is back with the team in which he won six world championships and played 12 of his 17 legendary NBA seasons.

Pippen has re-joined the Bulls as an ambassador, meaning he'll be a very visible presence moving forward at home games, team events and other community-related functions.

"It's great to be back with the organization," Pippen said while at the United Center on Thursday. "I don't feel like I ever left, I just wasn't as active as I look forward to being in the future. To be part of the Bulls family again means a lot to me. I've always cheered them on no matter how far away I was at the time and wished them the best. Hopefully, I can bring something positive to the organization as it tries to re-develop that winning tradition.

Dwyane [sic], we bite our thumbs at thee.

  • But will he tip???

  • We have heard every possible angle about LeBron/Wade FA pitch. Why didn't the Bulls do this hire before the FA period started. They could have taken Scottie Pippen on the Cleveland FA tour. Maybe it would changed LeBron's mind seeing it is coming from a guy whom he probably idolized.
I don't see much use now...

  • In reply to schaumburgfan:

This free agent farce was already dreamed up with these guys so whether Pippin had been there or not, Lebron and his boys had already planned on going through with this crap in Miami. I personally think they will win games but these guys are too friendly with each other and that will be their down fall. Just because they were buddies off the court don't mean it will work for 82 games. Since I have been watching the NBA I have never seen guys that want to play with each other this badly just because they are friends.

  • In reply to schaumburgfan:

Nothing we did would have stopped the trio from happening. The only thing that would have stopped it from happening was Miami's inability to clear cap space.

This going forward may help us draw other talent. But I think our talent on the floor will continue to be our biggest asset.

  • In reply to mdot1986:

Happy to see Scottie back...i just wish he was a part of the coaching staff.

  • In reply to mdot1986:

According to his coaches and teammates, Pip was an intelligent player and a great teammate. He's even said on more than one occasion that he'd like to get into coaching. I wonder why he hasn't gotten a job on anyone's bench since he retired. He's been in trouble for gun possession and drunk driving, but those things happened a long time ago. I wonder if there's something else going on.

  • In reply to magestew:

Pippen will not coach in the league because he isn't willing or able to put in the time and grunt work required to be a coach at any level.

My sesne is that he fancies himself a too great of a player to have to go through the process of becoming a head coach, he would prefer to be annointed.

Just like Jordan hasn't been susccessful as an executive, Pippen would not make it as a coach.

I am lot happier with a guy like TT who will work his ass off to make the Bulls better and figure out how to beat the Heat.

  • In reply to mdot1986:

    Good stuff.

I'm happy for him, the Bulls' organization and it's fans.

  • In reply to mdot1986:

    Good I love Scottie

  • In reply to mdot1986:

    Great move!

Maybe they'll bring back his candy bar.

    ...mmm.

  • In reply to mdot1986:

    THIS JUST IN:

Orlando is matching the offer sheet for JJ Redick.

    http://realgm.net/src_wiretap_archives/68177/20100715/magic_to_match_redicks_offer_sheet/

  • In reply to mdot1986:

Damn, I thought we would have him. Well . welcome to Chicago Ronnie Brewer. We are still going to need a shooter. I'm not a Roger Mason fan at all. I would definitely pass on him. Who else would be a good optioon?

  • In reply to Vedo:

Which is why we should have gone after Morrow even while the Reddick offer was still pending.

He was/is quite likely the best pure shooter in the NBA.

So he and Brewer combined would make a heck of a shooting guard, if they were in one body.

  • In reply to mdot1986:

    Vedo,

I think Ronnie Brewer gets signed, but if I were the Bulls I would go after either Rudy Fernandez or Sam Young in a trade just to bolster the SG position.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

not a shooting guard, not a shooting guard, not a shooting guard.

I'm sure that your psychiatrist has recommended some exercises to help cope with your problem, you should try them right before you post.

  • In reply to mdot1986:

seems like we will be fine at sg position. what the heck are we doin about a backup PG!!!!!!!!!!! and center??

  • In reply to mdot1986:

    bully,

You have to think that Brad Miller is coming back. And I still like Acie Law plus or Luther Head.

    PG - Rose/Law?/Head?/Lucas?
    C - Noah/Miller?/Asik

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Head is not a PG, he is an undersized SG, which is why he cannot find a home in the NBA. He could not play point in college, but he could get away with playing SG in college, apparently not in the NBA.

  • In reply to mdot1986:

    Vedo,

Just to examine trade possibilities, I think these guys could be available.

    Rudy Fernandez - Portland
    Sam Young - Memphis
    Wayne Ellington - Minnesota
    Corie Brewer - Minnesota
    Nick Young - Washington

In terms of FA's, I think these guys could get a look.

    - Ronnie Brewer
    - Rasual Butler
    - Tracy McGrady
    - Roger Mason Jr.
    - Flip Murray

  • In reply to MrHappy:

    Happy,

I'm with you on Ronnie Brewer. I definitely think he is a lock.

Rudy Fernandez: We don't have anything POR wants, so I don't see anything happening there.

    Sam Young: I haven't really seen his game, but I think he's more of a 3 than a 2.

Wayne Ellington: Not really a fan. I'd pass on him.

Corey Brewer: He's athletic as hell, but he's not really a shooter.

Nick Young: I would give him a look, but no sure about his defense. He can shoot, which is a good thing.

Roger Mason, TMAC, Rasual Butler, and Flip Murray are a pass for me.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

    bully,

I'm sure the guys were waiting on Redick.

Miller wants to come back to the Bulls and from what I hear Brewer would like to be a Bull.

I expect some more signings by the Bulls tomorrow.

    (Brewer and Miller)

  • In reply to MrHappy:

    vedo,

Assuming Brewer comes to Chicago, here's what the Bulls have.

    SG - Brewer/Korver
    SF - Deng/Johnson

I'm not too confident about that.

I still think Sam Young, Rudy Fernandez and Nick Young could be had via CASH or picks.

And James Johnson could be included, if the deal is sweetened a bit.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

I'm not too thrilled about Johnson either, and I don't like Korver at the 2. If we could get rid of Johnson and get some of those guys, it would be aweomse. I just don't see anyone wanting him unless we included Taj in a package deal.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

    Happy,

Looks like your boy Rudy has a list of 4 teams he wants to play four. All I know is that NYK are one of them. Not sure about the Bulls.

    http://twitter.com/FisolaNYDN

  • In reply to Vedo:

This tweet has the Bulls on the list...

  • In reply to MrHappy:

    Vedo,

I can't see why Chicago wouldn't be one of those 4 teams.

The Bulls are in need of a starting SG and Chicago itself is a very international city.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

I agree. He would get PT here for sure. I hope we could get a good deal done.

Also, it looks like Shaq won't be going to ATL after all. Neither party interested anymore.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

I'm with you, Happy...cash considerations are a viable alternative for prying Fernandez away from the Blazers. I don't know if Pritchard no longer being their GM helps or hurts our chances. What I do know is a Rose/Fernandez backcourt would be among the most athletic and exciting in the NBA -- if not the most. Rudy's game is obviously tailored for an offense way more up-tempo than what the Blazers play (slowest pace in the NBA I think?), and hopefully Thibs will have the boys running quite a bit this year...or on defense at least...

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Sounds like Brad(Miller) might be headed to Houston as a backup to Yao. Too bad if that's the case. I'd be willing to throw a little extra money at he and Barnes with the freed up money from Redick's $7 Mil. Then hopefully you can still sign Brewer and maybe Alston at backup point.

  • In reply to MarkNorman:

I think that Brad is getting MLE type offers, the Bulls couldn't pay him that if Reddick signs.

Now that it appears that he won't the Bulls could offer the MLE, just not sure how many years Miller is looking at. I doubt the Buls are interested in more than one or 2 max.

  • In reply to MarkNorman:

Now that we know for sure Orlando

  • In reply to MarkNorman:

Brewer is a better fit if D-Rose's three point shot it on.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

I can almost bet you Barnes is going to the heat

    http://twitter.com/matt_barnes22

  • In reply to UtahBullsFan:

    I'll second that.

  • In reply to UtahBullsFan:

Barnes clearly wants/needs to get more than a minumum contract. With Haslem and Miller on board, Miami is finally out of money, so hopefully Barnes goes elsewhere, like to the Bulls.

I don't know what we are waiting for, we need some nasty and s little crazy too.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

I'm with you, Happy...cash considerations are a viable alternative for prying Fernandez away from the Blazers. I dunno if Pritchard not being in charge there anymore helps or hurts our chances, but what I do know is that a Rose/Rudy backcourt is instantly one of the most athletic and dynamic in the NBA -- if not the most. Rudy's game is obviously tailored for a way more up-tempo offense than what the Blazers run (slowest pace in the NBA I think?), and I anticipate Thibs having the boys running a lot, then slowing it down some to accommodate Boozer's post game.

The other name I've not seen discussed is Shane Battier. He's not a natural 2-guard, but he has great size at 6'8'', can shoot the 3 and can definitely defend the position (which, under Thibodeau, is ultimately more important; think Heat matchups). Houston is set at the wings with Kevin Martin, Trevor Aiza and an emerging Chase Budinger and probably doesn't need Battier. He would be a great fit in the locker room and can easily take the captain spot vacated by Kirk Hinrich. He even has the Duke pedigree Bulls' management seems to like and could reunite with his Blue Devil teammate Boozer.

Daryl Morey is a smart guy and with his shrewd management of Houston's cap, I think he'd welcome some financial relief if the Bulls could provide it...which they can.

  • In reply to mdot1986:

if its that simple why arent they signed yet? like brad hope he comes back. not sure the bulls really want law because he would be signed already and playing in summer league

  • I agree. Too little too late to add the star power to the bulls brass. Should have been done at the beginniung of the FA process. Maybe the Bulls have learned through this process that they have to push the Bulls dynasty years of the 90s rather than shy away from them to attract some top guys.
