Bulls / Thibodeau reach verbal agreement

Per a bunch of places, but here's KC:

Tom Thibodeau has accepted the Bulls' 3-year offer to become the team's
18th head coach in franchise history, according to sources. No formal
announcement can be made until the conclusion of the NBA Finals between
the Lakers and Thibodeau's Celtics.

Also some info about his assistants:

Sources said Thibodeau is expected to keep Pete Myers on his staff
and bring with him former Bulls and current Thunder assistant Ron
Adams. Other candidates for his staff include Thunder assistant Mo
Cheeks, former Knicks assistant Andy Greer and former Kings coach Eric Musselman.

Former Bull Rick Brunson will be considered for player development roles, joining expected holdover Randy Brown.

I'm glad it's official, or at least as official as it can be prior to the end of the finals.

Nice job Gar/Pax on getting this one done.  Scottie PIppen was also rumored to possibly be a candidate for an assistant coaching position by Will Perdue on Westwood One's coverage of the NBA.

I also like the assistant staff they're putting together, but I don't think Scottie ultimately ends up with the  Bulls this season.  I would like him to get a shot with us if he's interested, but I don't see it happening.

  • I wonder what Pippen's role would be. Hopefully if he came on he could do something with JJ since they have similar body's and games in a sense.

I think the news is great for us, with the coaching staff looking like they can turn us into a contender with their experience.

I just wonder what this news means for the draft and for Free Agency. Hopefully only positive things. Especially if we bring back Pip. I wonder what Wade would say then.

While I was always a Pippen supporter, I just don't think he has it in him to be a good, nevermind great coach, assistant or head.

Only real complaint I have is we should have done this two years ago instead of the VDN hire.

  • In reply to DontLetsStart:

but now there's the hype for the fans and for free agency.

  • Wade would have to eat his words an enjoy losing to the Bulls for the rest of his career lol (Hoping LeBron comes lol)

That would be AWESOME if they hired Pippen.

But ya i agree, Bulls are deff. trying to become a contender. I would love to add Mo Cheeks as well. I think this is great for our Draft and free agency. Now that we have a coach we can look at players who will be able to fit into our system. Im looking forward to the press conference, thats when we can really find out about Thibodeau. He got a great look at us last year, so im sure he knows our players pretty darn well.

  • Do you think if we renamed our franchise to "The Chicago Gabrielle Unions" D-Wade would ditch Miami and sign?

    Hot chick. Terrible name!

  • In reply to jamatokwu:

Im sure we can get her a Luvabull gig lol

  • This is good news. I'm glad the search won't stretch on any longer but now we're back with the non-stop LeBron talk for another 26 days.

Obviously the draft is between now and then but that will get little attention considering where we're picking.

  • While he wasn't my first choice, it's good to see the Bulls got the man they wanted from the start. That Boston is in the finals will only help Thibodeau's aura in the eyes of perspective free agents.

  • In reply to WearShades:

I really hope your first choice wasnt cheeks...

  • In reply to 1096ballenf:

I dont think it was...i think Thibodeau was their main target...hopefully Cheeks will come be a assistant here though. This is his hometown.

  • In reply to 1096ballenf:

I wanted Mo Cheeks, Ron Adams and Scottie Pippen all along.

I hope Tom Thibodeau does the SMART THING and hires them all as his assistants.

If he doesn't, then I'm sticking to my previous statements that this hire was a MISTAKE.

  • In reply to 1096ballenf:

not a mistake. Like I said earlier, we will find out in a couple of years whether he can coach or not. At this moment, we got the best coach on the market and he didn't accept other offers because of the Bulls potential. We know that and so does the media. We are getting nothing but positive publicity and that's going to only help us.

  • Great hire Bulls. Now I hope all goes well with the free agent signings without losing too much. It would be nice to keep all of the guys that are signed with the Bulls now but I know it wont happen with the free agents signing with the team. Who knows what may happen though.

  • I am not sure if Pippen is upto the hard work. An Assistant's job is tough and takes away a lot of time from home/family without the prestige of a head coach. They need to maybe add him in a role of player development to coach the Small Forward position(JJ,Deng,LeBron?) and then see how it goes.

  • I am glad they got him before the draft. Doug, do we know what kind of offense he would run?

  • Isn't that the same offense that Skiles ran? If we do that offense, we need at least two more 3pt shooters. Deng worked well in the previous version if that offense too.

  • In reply to kbar17:

Ray Allen or Anthony Morrow, drafting James Anderson can be the solution. How about S&T Joe Johnson for Deng/Hinrich, provided the Bulls sign LeBron and Bosh goes to Miami

    WWW is at it again?

  • In reply to kbar17:

I don't know. The more I hear about this guy, especially player comments he just sounds like a terrific hire. I didn't know he had the one on one/true coaching involvement with players like Yao. And Rondo and Garnett's comments, while I can't stand those guys, if he can interact so well and command such respect from these hardasses/cases, that's saying something.

I think we might have just hit the jackpot. Hopefully will get Bosh or Lebron(or both) tome join Thib's, Derrick, and Joakim in Chicago. Having four time All NBA Defensive team Mo Cheeks coaching/working with Derrick would almost be too much to ask for with Thib's overall master defensive schemes as the backdrop. I'll be happy for Derrick if this comes to pass. But regardless the Thib's hire for Derrick and Joakim is well deserved as these guys have worked their tails off to reach this moment/opportunity.

Way to go Bulls. Now go get some studs to join forces with D and Joakim on Thib's watch.

  • In reply to kbar17:

I thought the Bulls would just keep it simple and sign Lawerence Frank to be their next head coach. But I have to say I love this coaching signing. Sure, the guy doesn't have head coaching experience, but he has tons of experience (with substance) as a assistant coach. I think i'm already giddy to see the Bulls on defense next season.

  • In reply to kbar17:

I am now rooting for the Celtics in the finals ;)

  • In reply to kbar17:

Congrats to the bulls and their fans, this is the best news we could have got regarding the coaching hires, to get Maurice Cheeks as an assistant also, AWESOME. I wish Pippen had landed an assistant spot too, but I like what they have in place.

  • In reply to kbar17:

Ah Mr Happy, love your enthusiam but thankfully you miss the mark most times, Mo Cheeks over Thibs is laughable...as an assistant maybe....but we all saw how he did when he was the head coach....zero zilch nada...thank goodness you didnt have a say :-)

  • In reply to kbar17:

I have to admit that I'm pleasantly surprised by this news. Thibs is a great hire. While not for the same reasons as Mr. Happy, I would have bet on Mo Cheeks as the favorite to land the job (seemed to be more along the lines of a Bulls-type move).

I'd love to know why the sudden sense of urgency. Was it that the Hornets had a confirmed offer, or was it something more (not talking about WWW rumors, either)?

In any event, this is a good way to start things off for the FA period.

  • The best non basketball thing about this hire is that he will be universally welcomed with open arms in Chicago, except of course for Mr Happy, which makes it even better.

TT was the best non brand name(Phil Jackson, Doc Rivers) coaching name available and the Bulls got him. The more that you learn about the guy the more that you like him.

I think that he is JVG junior. or maybe senior, depending on how good he turns out to be. JVG turned out to be a great headcoach when nobody was sure about him.

What a joy this is compared to last time, hopefully the rest of the summer will follow suit.

  • Interesting article on Yahoo sports about Thibodeau/Bulls/LeBron/Cavs.
Not sure how much to believe..
