Thibodeau prefers Bulls job, Forman [update] not on his way to see him

tomthibodeau.jpg

Per Adrian Wojnarowski's twitter:

Thibodeau
is still waiting on inevitable Hornets offer, but sources say he's
eager to meet with Nets and Bulls. Chicago's his preferred job.

Also per MIke McGraw:

There were indications Bulls general manager Gar Forman was already
headed to Boston for a meeting with Thibodeau on Saturday. The NBA
Finals are not scheduled to begin until next Thursday.

It will be interesting to see how much Thibodeau costs an organization to hire him, he's extraordinarily sought after given that he's an assistant with no head coaching experience.  I could see him getting a deal as high as 4 million a season despite his lack of experience simply due to the competition.

This also feels a bit like going with the evil we don't know vs the evil we do know.  Since Thibodeau hasn't had to run a team we don't get to pick over his record or flaws like we can with the other head coaching candidates.  I'm curious to see whether the Bulls are sold on him already or whether they need to be sold in the interview process.

Interestingly though, I think the rest of the free agents and league is on board with judging Thibodeau as better than guys like Avery Johnson, Byron Scott, and Maurice Cheeks despite a lack of experience.

So if you're betting?   Do you take Thibodeau or the field for the Bulls next coach.  I think I might lean towards Thibodeau.

---- McGraw updated his blog and Forman is not going afterall.  It sounds like the Bulls will wait until after the finals is over. ---

Word is, Gar Forman did not travel to Boston to meet with Celtics
assistant Tom Thibodeau. It looked like a get-together might be
arranged after Boston eliminated Orlando in the Eastern Conference
finals on Friday. The Celtics have five days off before starting the
Finals against the Lakers or Suns on Thursday.

So why are the Bulls waiting?   A few reasons pop to mind:

1: They just like to operate deliberately regardless of what fans think of it.
2: They still feel they have a shot at Doc Rivers or Phil Jackson and want to wait on them.
3: They want to try to gather more back channel info on what varying players would think of different coaching hires.
4: They want to wait awhile longer to make a bigger splash closer to FA starting to keep themselves more relevant in the news
5: Some other reason I haven't managed to come up with in the past three minutes.

  • Did you see that Rose said NO to Calipari?

    http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/66891/20100529/rose_says_calipari_should_stay_at_kentucky/

    That's a good thing.

Also, this is what the DailyHerald wrote about the coaching search.

    via Mike McGraw:

The Bulls were hoping for a snappy coaching search after releasing Vinny Del Negro, but Boston

  • I think it's a TWO HORSE RACE...Maurice Cheeks or Tom Thibodeau.

  • Is it possible that Thibodeau asked the Bulls to wait until after the playoffs were done, so that he could focus on his current job?

It sounds like the Bulls are still interested in Thibodeau, but don't want to be rushed by rumors that he'll be offered the New Orleans job. Thibodeau can't really make any decisions until the Finals are over, anyway.

  • Doug,

It's hard to say. He's a HOT NAME right now.

New Orleans and New Jersey both want to meet with him again.

It wouldn't shock me to see him leave the Eastern Conference out of respect for the Celtics and go to the New Orleans Hornets.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

If he's dumb enough to do that, they can have him. He has to know how hard it is to make it as a head coach in this league, and that one job on a hopeless team can dig you into a hole for the rest of your career.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Im telling you guys...Bulls are trying to buy some time....we trying to keep our name fresh. Thibideau is the hott name right now and i would probably consider him being the #1 candidate. We have about a month left of all this LeBron talk....its going to be a long month with new rumors every single day. If we keep our name out there and keep LeBron attention on us...i like our chances. Thats why i say...hire Thibodeau within the next week or so....After that...wait about 2 weeks and hire Scottie Pippen as one of the assistants.

Still cant believe Lawrence Frank gets a interview and not Byron Scott.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Us having a slow coaching search isnt a bad thing....The Bulls hold all the chips right now. Most of the coaches available right now would probably prefer the Bulls job...once we hire a coach...the rest of the league will probably start hiring.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

I'm on the Thibadou bandwagon as long as Jackson doesnt want to return. I think if the lakers disgrace him by throwing chump change in his face he may reconsider the bulls.

    COACHING UPDATE:

K.C. Johnson just wrote that Thibodeau might not be the guy they want to interview. Instead, it could be BRIAN SHAW.

  • Doug,

Good. Personally, I think that guy is a SNAKE.

I saw a report on Yahoo that the NCAA could be looking into the recruiting of Bledsoe now.

Calipari cheated again...how could that be?

  • In reply to MrHappy:

No wonder he seems to want out of Kentucky.

I agree completely, we shouldn't go near the guy.
