LeBron reaching out to Eddy Curry

This is kind of fascinating in many ways:

LeBron James has reached out to the Knicks, which may or may not be such a good thing for Donnie Walsh's club.

James, according to a source, has contacted Knicks center Eddy Curry
about working out together at some point during the offseason. There
may be nothing more to it than the fact that James and Curry are
represented by the same agent, Leon Rose. James and Curry also have close ties to noted NBA power broker William Wesley, whom the Knicks put in charge of Curry's workouts last summer.

But Curry's involvement in the Knicks' recruitment of James is
interesting since the veteran center has had a famous falling-out with
head coach Mike D'Antoni, which began as far back as D'Antoni's first practice with the Knicks.

On the one hand, Eddy Curry can't be real happy in NY right now.  He's on the last year of his contract, and he clearly won't be going back there after it's over.   In that case, it's hard to envision him really selling the Knicks hard as an organization to play for particularly given the way D'Antoni has taken a crap on him after Isiah Thomas handed the keys to the franchise to him.

That being said, I'm not sure this really helps the Bulls much either.   What does Curry think about his time on the Bulls in retrospect?   Does he harbor ill will towards us?   Does he think badly of Paxson for trading him or how he was treated with his heart?   Who knows.

Maybe the team that comes out best from this is Miami, if there's any impact at all.

  • Let's not over-analyze every report that's out there, otherwise we're all going to need psychological assistance way before July 1st...

I just hope one of James/Bosh signs here, add either one to our current nucleus and this team looks really good next year.

This is my first post here, I check your blog everyday and I love your posts!

  • It looks more and more like Miami's chance to get LeBron. Then can get trade for Tony Parker, Wade and LeBron and if they can sign Haslem, they can do the old Bulls way. Ofcourse Wade or nobody is like MJ, but LeBron is a lot better than Pippen to compensate.

My guess is that Miami will try to resurrect the "Showtime" offense... in which case they will need a big, not a point guard. After all, Pat Riley is the one who coached Magic Johnson in this offense... the player whose game Lebron's most resembles.

  • In reply to schaumburgfan:

Doug, this Lebron drama is Kobe to the bulls all over again...

  • In reply to schaumburgfan:

  • I'd like to believe that Curry wouldnt harbor that much ill will towards Chicago. He should at the very least acknowledge and appreciate the AMAZING opportunity he was given here. For the love of god we moved the ROY to make room for him....

Just out of curiosity, did anyone catch Kobe's performance last night?

    kidding kidding..Ill drop it. :)

  • Eddy Curry really? Maybe Lebron wanted to know what's the best pizza joint in New York, or the best place to get a hot dog. I cant remember Doug was it Eddy Curry or Oliver Miller that left the bench to order a pizza?

  • In reply to Snypershawn:

Or maybe he was asking who has better pizza after an extended stay, Chicago or New York. If that's the case, we have him in the bag.

  • This may be a guess, but I can't see Eddy Curry influencing LBJ much whether it be a good or bad reflections from his time with the Bulls.

  • We really don't know how much ill-will Curry harbors towards both the Bulls and the Knicks. After all, both teams gave him a chance to make a lot of money.
Or LeBron is doing his due diligence and talking to anybody and everybody to make some kind of analysis. Hopefully, June 2010 will not be the month when the Bulls won the mythical 7th championship.

  • I don't know about the money...but I guess Beasley and a 1st round pick might be a start. I know Beasley is crap but he was a 2nd pick and Spurs might think a change of scenery and not being asked to be the 2nd best player might help.
More than LeBron and Bosh, Miami has the benefit to attract the min salary free agents because of the no state tax

  • I am slightly worried that Lebron could be working out with Curry to get a feel for what it might be like to play with him as his center.

If Curry finds a way to get/stay healthy he will be the Knicks starting center next season, so Lebron has to consider that in his decision.

Now, I think that Curry is about as intelligent as a Cro-magnun or Neanderthal and more likely to end up being the new Jerome James, but he has fooled people before.

Can he fool Lebron this summer.

I am a little surprised that you haven't considered this angle.

  • In reply to BigWay:

I also had the same thoughts. But Curry seemed like a nice guy and remember Paxson told that he thought about Curry as his kid. Hopefully, Curry doesn't bad mouth the Bulls.
Is LeBron a very smart guy who is going to work out with all his probable future teammates(Rose, Curry etc.) and see how he feels

  • In reply to BigWay:

    Washington won the Draft Lottery.

    1.) Washington
    2.) Philly
    3.) New Jersey

That means no John Wall or Evan Turner for the Nets.

I think the Bulls are still the leader in the clubhous for LBJ.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Cross off the Nets for the Lebron sweepstakes. Jay-Z got 99 problems and the pick is one. Ha! I said it first! Now be prepared to hear this joke a hundred more times this week.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

Supposedly, from what i hear....cant believe you dont know about this yet Doug....But LeBron was looking at houses in Highland Park today or tomorrow.

Maybe he asked Eddy where to look for a house in Chicago.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

I think he is leaving too....this is the whole reason why he only signed a 3 year deal. He wanted options and he has them now.

  • Yea, but he is stuck in NY this upcoming season, which would be Lebron's first in NY.

If Lebron ends up in NY, David Lee, who is not really a center anyway is likely to be gone, and Curry and his $10 million contract will almost certainly start at center if he can do much more than waddle down the court.

I don't view him as a starting calibre center, I didn't even when he was with the Bulls, he turned out to be exactly what I thought he would be, a big fat dumb piece of shit.

Never the less somebody has to occupy the middle for the KNicks next year and he seems to be the most likely one to occupy the space.

Hopefully, Lebron will come away from his experience with Curry by deciding he doesn;t want to be stuck in the same zip code with that guy, even if only for one season.

  • Curry might not harbor any ill will against the Bulls, but he still might have some disturbing things to say to Lebron about coming to Chicago. This is the guy who was tied up in his home (along with his family) and robbed at gunpoint in 2007, and his 3 year old son witnessed the murder of his mother and sister near Derrick's hood in 2009. Curry's been one of the most infamously out of shape players in recent years, I don't think Lebron is reaching out because of his skills as a personal trainer.
