Don't underestimate the power of having an All-Star

With the Bulls endning their 12-year All-Star drought on Thursday as point guard Derrick Rose was selected to participate in the 2010 All-Star game in Dallas, did they actually gain more than just having a representative in the game?

Stars like stars. Kobe Bryant wouldn't have four rings if it hadn't been for Shaquille O'Neal and Pau Gasol. Kevin Garnett wouldn't have joined Boston if they hadn't made the trade for Ray Allen and with Paul Pierce in town already. It's simple. If you're good, players will look at you when their contract is up.

But it doesn't just play a factor in free agency. This is a factor in trades, too. Say you have a star player who is playing on a losing team, and he wants to move on. If said player has any say in the matter, he would obviously prefer to join a team that wins, or at least has the talent to win. That doesn't mean the Bulls will be front in line to getting such a player, but having an All-Star helps going forward.

It's not just stars that notices star players. Bench players who fill specific roles will look at your team, too. Hoping to squeeze themselves into a situation where they can win a championship in the near future. Some players even take paycuts to join good teams. Marquis Daniels of Boston is the latest example of this, as he's earning just under $2 million this year, compared to almost $7 million last year.

From star to star, the talks are always ongoing. After participating players meet each other in February, they develop this look on their face when they meet during the regular season. A look of respect. A look that says equal. Rose will from now on be met by that look, as will he join a club. A club of greatness and a club of respectability. He's no longer a good player on a decent team much like Luol Deng, Kirk Hinrich and Ben Gordon was looked at as. No. He'll be 'Derrick Rose - All-Star, and the franchise player'.

This All-Star birth comes at just the right time for the Bulls. With max cap space, Rose will be playing alongside the three biggest names in free agency this year: LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Come July, perhaps Bosh looks at Jose Calderon, Hedo Turkoglu and the Raptors financial structure and concludes going to Chicago to pair up with a fellow All-Star might be better. LeBron James might think twice before writing off Chicago, seing as the two places always in the rumour mill (New York and New Jersey) didn't have a All-Star on the court next to him. Wade could feel more secure in returning home, knowing he's got fellow Chicagoan and fellow All-Star Rose right there next to him.

Whatever happens with the Bulls in free agency, this has only helped their cause.

  • doug us getting chris bosh who should be our 1st 2nd and 3rd option if lebron cant come only has sacramento standing in our way at getting him..if we can swing a 3 team deal to give toronto hinrich, martin, tyrus and sacaramento givin a draft pick expiring and takin on noce and another bad contract then we can land bosh by the deadline..because gettin him in the offseason is a stretch..bosh to me plays like carlos boozer but with a shooting touch..he's our go get..if we cant get him then stoudemire should be our guy..but swingin a deal that persuades kevin martin outta sacramento and getting us bosh while keeping both sides happy is our best bet..sacramento is moving martin..and bosh will only be traded for something that makes sense..the raptors wanted to trade for martin..and the raptors were interested in hinrich and thomas..

    to chicago

    bosh
    nocioni
    wright
    belienlli

    to toronto

    kevin martin
    hinrich
    and tyrus thomas

    to sacramento

    loul deng
    james johnson
    jerome james expir..

    who doesnt do this deal?

To answer your question: Sacramento and Toronto

The Bulls? I don't think they would want to trade Deng, Hinrich, Thomas, and James Johnson for essentially just Bosh. The B&B rumor was Bulls would probably do something like Hinrich, Thomas, Johnson and picks for Bosh. I can't see that happening at all. I agree we probably need to get a third team involved in order to get Bosh, but I firmly believe we'd be worse with the above trade

Bulls still arnt a very good team...we just won 5 games on the road...which is great and were improving but we just won 5 games in a row and were still only in 7th place right now. As a Bulls fan i want to win championships, not just make the playoffs. You have to make a run at Amare in my opinion. Especailly if you can get rid of either Deng or Hinrichs salary. Once you do that you can go after Joe Johnson in free agency. Leaving the Bulls looking like this...

    Rose
    Joe Johnson
    Deng
    Amare
    Noah

That team is 1 or 2 in the eastern conference and a title contender.

This western swing we've seen why opponents shot .390 against the Bulls' defense, and now .436 overall. Joakim, Taj, and Tyrus have become three of the best interior shot blockers in the league. Chicago is No.1 in the NBA in blocks and rebounds. The past few years, and usually, the best rebounding team is also the best or near best defensive team. If the Bulls continue their terrific interior help defense reading and reacting with double teams it bodes well for this season.

If they can figure out how to release Derrick from double teams besides just always dumping it off to Brad Miller, and that's a huge if, but if so Derrick can continue his rampage. That would mean winning a lot of games, and being a dangerous playoff team.

I'm so glad you think I look like Doug. It's quite the upgrade ;)

Good stuff. Its a big boost to our free agency plans. Star players want to play with players who can play big. Rose is a great all-star player because he is not a selfish player who doesnt look to boost his stats and I think scorers like Bosh, Wade, LBJ, etc like that. People always say LBJ and Wade would not work because egos could clash and i know for sure Rose doesnt have an ego and would gladly play Robin to one of those Batmans.

  • In reply to Yunqn:

The Bulls boards that I go to, I have been saying the same thing. Having an all-star, as long as he doesnt get seriously injured between now and the playoffs and during the playoffs is huge for Chicago. It increases the chance of us getting a top 3 player.

  • In reply to Yunqn:

Mate, this makes sense for nobody! Lol!.

The Bulls and most other teams won't deal for Bosh purely cos of the same reason every team wants him! And that is, even if a team made a deal for Bosh, at the end of the season they'd end up with the risk of him leaving!! Because at the end of the season, no matter what, he WILL become a free agent!!

Which is why the majority of teams in the FA race are waiting for the summer, so that when we make an offer to them, they're locked in!!! Make sense??

  • In reply to Yunqn:

Thank you Z...you know whats going on here. The Bulls are playing solid right now yes...BUT in the long run, you need to trade some of these guys right now for legit All Stars. Amare is in Phoenix right now wanting out. And just think about it...the last 2 years the Bulls have played Phoenix...we beat them all 3 times! Rose's dunk on Barbose at home last year, Rose big game at Phoenix last year and this years big dunk on Gordon Dragic highlight those 3 games. Amare knows what Chicago has and Im pretty darn positive he would stay with us after this season.

  • In reply to Yunqn:

Another thing you have to remember is this...last year at this time Tyrus Thomas was playing the best basketball of his life...and most Bulls fans didnt want to see him leave because they thought he would turn out to be a superstar. Now most fans would of wished we had gotten rid of him. You have to look at the whole body of work, not just the last couple of games. The better we play the more value our players are going to have. Most of our guys value right now is probably they highest they will get. (Kirk or Deng just to name 2) Bulls need to make a trade for Stat. Once they do that...you then have Rose,Noah, and Amare trying to recruit Joe Johnson to come play for Chicago. Bulls become contenders if this happens. VINNY,PAX,GAR...go call up Steve Kerr and make it happen!
