Podcast download: My appearance on Charlotte Bobcats Monday

The show is now up for download here.   We had a little confusion over Chris Paul towards the end of the show where Joshua had some old salary information in front of him [I've done the same thing several times, once with Rip Hamilton where I wanted to trade for him as an expiring deal because none of the salary databases updated him for his extension], and then my phone cut out on him leaving him hanging, but outside of those couple minor hiccups, it was really a fun show. Joshua knows his stuff, and has some good NBA contacts.

One particularly interesting tidbit he dropped on me is that when he was talking to Lawrence Frank, that Frank said management had told him for some time that he was going to be fired, but he had to continue to coach out the string until that point.

It makes you wonder if a similar thing is happening with Vinny Del Negro today.  I definitely envy Joshua's contacts in that he's pulling guys like Lawrence Frank or Bobcat's assistants on his show, now I owe you guys a Pete Myers or a Bob Oceipka interview.

He seems to like Frank as a possible Vinny replacement, partially because Frank went out so poorly that he'd be willing to take the job now to rebuild his reputation and needs to do something positive.   I agree that Frank would be motivated, and prior to this season, I think his body of work was very positive, especially given that Devin Harris absolutely broke out under him and not Avery Johnson [who attempts to take credit for developing Harris].

I'm not sure if Frank is my top choice, I'm not sure who my top choice is, but he's definitely a choice that I wouldn't be upset with.  Even after he was fired, the players said it was their fault and not his.  I think that says a lot about a coach when the players defend him after he's gone rather than throwing him under the bus.

Anyway, thanks to Joshua for having me on the show, I only regret we didn't get a chance to talk preshow or post show due to my poor schedule, as I would have enjoyed getting to know him better and talk some NBA off the air.

  • Hey Doug, I listened to the Charlotte Podcast. Pretty cool that they know about you and brought you on keep it up man.

I just wanted to comment on the part where he asked you about Derrick Rose. You need to stop with the whole 2nd year jump thing. Most PG's have a great second year because their 1st year was horrific. CP3 is the only PG lately to have a year parallel with DRose's and his jump in stats didn't come till year 3. When you average 16 6 and 3 it is hard to improve in year 2 especially if your team got worse.

And Rose has been injured, take the last month and he's averaging about 20 and 6 and his assists should go up if anyone starts making shots. Rose is fine and I still see no reason for you to be worried about him, he will be a top 10 guy and top 3 PG in the league no doubt.

Side Note: You mentioned you didn't want Steve Francis. Well Stevie Franchise was awesome for about a 5 year stretch averaging about 26 ppg and a good 8asts, bad example. Francis just got injured and flared out! Are you saying that you think Rose is gonna destroy the league for 5 years and then get injured. Francis was flat out awesome!
