Berger: No decision on VDN yet

From his blog:

At the time those basketballs were
bouncing, no decision on Del Negro's fate had been made. But don't read
too much into that; the writing is on the wall for an imminent end to
Del Negro's tenure as the latest Bulls coach who flamed out around
Christmastime.

"It's not a matter of if they fire Vinny," a second person familiar with the Bulls' thinking said, "but when they do it."

While I find this to be very believable, it's always odd to me that they've decided to fire the guy and are waiting for the right timing.   How is a 3 day layoff not the right timing unless you're still thinking about giving the guy another chance?

We'll see if they pull the trigger tomorrow, but I think they'll want to avoid the negative publicity.  I suppose they thought a Dec 23rd firing would also bring too much negative publicity, but I wouldn't think so.

We'll see what happens.  I give Vinny less than two weeks though.

  • after this season..i say we throw the bank at george karl...words from a denver website that says bring him... His career record, as an NBA head coach (regular season and post-season included), is 1001-726. That would be a .579 winning percentage in nearly 21 years worth of games. He has had records below .500 three times, the last time it happened was in 1988. He has won fifty or more games nine times, in his career, sixty or more three times.

    Since Karl

  • In reply to Yunqn:

another note bringing george karl would mean we have a talented team because jerry wouldnt spend money on just a head coach...persuading him to get a uptempo, defense minded hall of fame coach would make him spend money on other areas..rose and bosh and coacoh karl for 2010 season .. =)

  • In reply to Yunqn:

    Paxson or Cheeks.

  • so who else we going get..avery johnson and byron are the ONLY other good candidates who are proven and played on THE BIG STAGE..we need track records..we need success...we need stability and hall of fame type coaching..you cant deny hall of fame on any level..its the highest one..add every coach we had since phil and we wouldnt be close to the numbers that karls put up..karl and denver are far apart on money and denver doesnt have money like we do..a hall of fame coach vs what mo cheeks? is a joke..karl never gets credit because every team he had had a budget...karl coaching rose like every great point guard he had and adding bosh with noah being our marcus camby who had his best days in karl's system..makes absoulutely sense..theres no denying this guys coaching ability...period

  • all star break..like the suns last year..have the team coming back off break with a positive mind, give them something new... another thing doug...the thing ken berger said sums up the fact that loul deng replacing gordon when they score different is allowing no space and too much force contested shots...too slow pace and that salmons is inconsistent and a true undersized sf..not a guard.. and from rose not remembering anything..just shows how much vinny and this organizations is changing based on what they wish we were and what we arent..a half court team

  • If it's when, then why not today with a three-day break?

I like Larry Frank. White and nerdy.

  • In reply to muhammond:

    Whose Larry Frank?

  • In reply to Dpauley23:

Lawrence Frank, he coached the nets up until he got fired earlier in the year.

  • He gotten screwed alot though in playoffs. The 2001 ECF was the biggest rib job ever. They called a lane violation for Philly to win the game

  • In reply to Dpauley23:

i know denver is going to go all out to keep him..but like i said..a hall of fame coach is better than a reggie thesus or mo cheeks type of coach...we might not get him but if he's available i say throw the bank at him..but i'll settle for byron scott whos the second most proven coach out there..

  • In reply to Dpauley23:

Lawrence Frank? he never coached. He made RJ and Carter shit all over him. No thanks.

  • In reply to Dpauley23:

umm i know its a reach because of his potiential/production..but anthony morrow isnt a untouchable..but what kind of deal can we do to get him..realistically..p.s dont say noah because nelson barely likes bigs who cant score...and rose obviously wouldnt be traded..

  • In reply to Yunqn:

I am pretty sure he is an untouchble as it gets in Golden State.

  • In reply to Dpauley23:

Who is this the author and why does he all of a sudden have all this inside info that no one else does?

  • In reply to TheStig:

Woj been saying this too. Even said Reinsdorf was making calls around the league looking into different coaches

  • In reply to TheStig:

Jerry will never ever fire vinny and than go out and hire a big name coach.

  • In reply to TheStig:

I feel Vinny is still here because the bulls feel NONE of the assistants are capable of taking over - and a cheap outsider has not been found yet.

If JR can find that cheap outsider (like they did with Skiles), VDN will be dismissed.

Yet, I dont believe JR is personally making the calls (as mentioned above). That's what he pays a GM to do

  • In reply to TheStig:

JR doesn't want to pay 3 coaches (Skiles, VDN and new coach), so it is going to stay in the family. Bernie is the guy regardless of what berger writes. But Vinny looks to me like a lucky guy and somehow he will get through the season. Remember that Pax hates the press and he will do anything to make them look wrong...(lol)

Doug, after Joakim comments, why there is no players-only meeting announced?

  • Also George Karl likes to aileinate players. All of his star players have come to hate him eventually.

  • In reply to Newskoolbulls:

name me a player that has gotten adopted by their head coach..heck phil jackson makes fun of his players during games and interviews..all coaches get hated..so they hate back..

  • In reply to Yunqn:

winning cures everything..and i dont know if i always jinx something..but as soon as i said him...the nuggets are preparing a deal to keep him.(nbatv) just like when i said go get rudy gay and later on that night he gets 40 on miami..lmao..next prediction..get andrew bynum...

  • In reply to Yunqn:

he is a larry brown type with players, i pass big time.

  • I have heard of Wojo before but he hasn't been incredibly insightful. But I have never heard of Berger ever reporting on the bulls. Doug, where you trying to say you didn't hear of him either or that JR was making calls into coaches?

  • I don't know if he overachieved with NJ. He had the same roster that scott took to the finals and didn't get out of the second round and then had kidd, carter, rj and kristic and still couldn't get out of the second round. I would say Frank is an average NBA coach and is marginally better than VDN.
