Not so long about, I brought you news of something that you absolutely did not need to know about.
Every year during the offseason, NBA teams feel the irrepressible urge to humiliate their own players. And as the players are contractually oblige to forego their souls from the day they pass their physical, they are duty bound to comply, and to humiliate themselves for the benefit of us random fans. It's a beautiful, beautiful thing, and even if it leads to some very boring moments, it can sometimes be the highlight of your week.
Last year, the Bulls obliged us with a series of videos showing the Bulls players doing some really bad karaoke, in which most of the players took part. Kirk Hinrich shone; his sultry baritone and unflinchingly Iowan ways stirred loins and cured hearts around the world. Drew Gooden showed a better understanding of rhythm than defensive rotations, and, just like with his play, Joakim Noah's boundless enthusiasm more than made up for his lack of polish.
Meanwhile, just like the season that followed, Luol Deng had a shocker.
However, that was then, and this is now. It's a new dawn, a new day, a new season, and we're willing to forget past transgressions and focus on the positives. We can pretend we didn't hear Deng channelling a bag of spanners with his kitten-bludgeoning voice of fail last year, and we can act as though we don't remember the days when Derrick Rose was so camera shy that he wouldn't even look at one.
We don't have to remember those things, because now, we have new ammunition.
The Bulls have delivered with another high-quality singing video; and by that, I of course mean another dangerously low quality singing video. It featured returnees Noah, Hinrich, Thomas, Rose and Gray, interpsersed with some Stacey King visuals. And this time, Luol brings the noise.
In the past offseason, Luol Deng has returned to full health, added about 6 inches of jumpshot range, become a fine exponent of both protagonists in the pick and roll, learned how to defend LeBron James about as well as it can be done, refocused on rebounding, and generally won back the hearts and minds of those he had previously lost. Yet also this summer, he bought a wig and discovered the joys of falsetto.
And it's a beautiful thing.
