Per Sam Smith at Bulls.com, our former seminal starlet Larry Hughes may be staring down the barrel of a buyout once more.
The speculation in New York is the Knicks will try to buy out Hughes, who then could return to the Cavs with the Cavs uncertain about the status of Delonte West.
The bit about a possible return to the Cavs makes little to no sense, but the bit about the buyout certainly does.
Does anybody want to guess what Larry Hughes is shooting in preseason? I'll tell you.
5%.
Not 50%, not 35%, nor any kind of typo. He's shooting 5% in 5 games.
Awesome.
While the Bulls could certainly use a big two guard right now - as well as any two guard at all, given the departure of Ben Gordon and the bizarre appearances of both James Johnson and Luol Deng at the shooting guard spot in preseason - it's safe to say that they don't want or need Larry Hughes. In fact, that might be the safest thing anyone's ever said. Ever.
The trade that saw us get rid of Hughes - by the way, you can always tell what a team's MO behind a trade was when the phrase "got rid of" is used in place of "lost" - didn't exactly enhance our basketball product. Tim Thomas played a handful of games last year rather badly before being bought for a second time by the same team (which must be a first), and Jerome James isn't expected to play due to injury and apathy (the B-Side to 'Ebony And Ivory').
Nonetheless, the Knicks haven't enhanced their basketball product either. They actually played Hughes, and Larry responded with the .504% true shooting percentage which we know and don't love him for. They too appear to be despairing with him already, which is why these rumours (of a buyout (if they are true) are appearing after only 25 games played and six months passed.
While we're stuck with paying $11,466,600 to two players who will probably play 0 games for us this year, the alternative would be paying $13,655,268 to watch Larry Hughes pout and chuck. I think we did all right here.

Not played in the first half tonight, either.
If the Cav's could get larry hughes for like 2 million or less I think he'd be worth that.....then if he flops it won't cost them much......they could use some more shooters on that team
James Dolan last season was very cautious with buyouts so I dont know if he is willing to do that. Hughes is making what this season? 13? I dont see Knicks giving him 10 or even 9 to walk. They will just go the Marbury rout and send him home with pay if he becomes disruptive. As for the Cavs would they want him back? he didnt mesh with Lebron not to mention his comments about not being happy being in the finals with the Cavs because he couldnt play his type of game.
I'm not to knowledgeable about minimums and salary, so im more going to try to ask this as a question, I'f larry hughes gets bought out, then he becomes a free agent, and when he does, isn't there a good chance nowon will want him because of his bad attitude, then couldn't the cavs step in and say, hea wed like to sign you for cheap for 1 year, if you put up respectable states you'll get another big contract after that from someone if not us, wouldn't that be tempting for both sides? Hughes insures the rest of his career and might win a ring in the process aslong as he is a good boy while the cavs get another shooter for insurance for cheap?
Entirely possible in theory, but in practice, I think Larry Hughes and the Cavs are about as likely to reunite as the two Irelands are.
wow even if the Cavs could use a shooter, no way they are going to look at Hughes. Why??? A shooter that shoots 5% isn't even worth the minimum.
Hey I guess there are times to be really happy with Jerome James! At least he's a big body and no chucker ;)
Worse case scenario, they could just waive him with 100% right of set-off. Saves on the tax bill.
"Hughes made a huge admission that his erratic preseason (1 of 20 shooting) stems from not having a grasp of D'Antoni's system because D'Antoni gave him limited playing time."
It's always someone else's fault, isn't it?

yah, I guess I was more hoping for it to work then really thinking about the true likelyhood of it working in clevaland, cus I'm a Shaq fan, which means im now a fan of clevaland, and with west's off season issues I was just hoping for insurance, hopefully shaq will get his 5th ring before kobe, :), btw im a hometown hater (i live in LA and hate the lakers, for fun) but my loyalty lies with the bulls because I have family out there and so I love all chicago sports....
After an 0-3 performance tonight, Larry Hughes has managed to drop his FG% from 5% to 4%. You have to respect that.
