Chris Richard waived

On a day where seemingly the entire world has been waived - more on this later - the Bulls joined the party by waiving training camp invite Chris Richard. Richard had averaged 3.5 ppg and 5.3 rpg in 19.7 mpg during the preseason, playing one extremely good game and five highly forgettable ones, and yet even with the injury to Aaron Gray, his chances of making the team were never particularly high.

The Bulls roster now stands at 14...for now.
It is worthy of note that Derrick Byars has not been waived. This doesn't mean that he won't be, because the roster deadline for opening night is not until 6pm ET on Monday, and Byars' unguaranteed contracts means he can be kept on for a while while being paid per diem, thus providing short term insurance for a minimal price. But it's a good sign for those pulling for him to make the team. After all, no news is good news.

  • Might just be the guard shortage for the final preseason game - if Vinny really intends to keep Kirk and Jannero out for the minor injury things, and they don't want to play Derrick at all (short minutes at most), there aren't a lot of other options.

Byars is injured himself with a hyperextended knee.

I read somewhere he's back practicing today - and it's not like the poor kid has the "just being cautious" option the others can take. (Or the team can mandate for them.)

I am devastated by this news lmao. He beasted this preseason ok well in one game against his former crappy team. Have a good career overseas if you stay in shape.

so many waived today: Mike Sweetney, Mike Taylor, Ime Udoka, Jarron Collins, Andre Barret, Jake Voshkul, Ronald Dupree, Mike Wilks, Juan Dixon, Michael Ruffin, Morris Almond, Maceo Baston, James White, Mario West etc etc etc lmao.

this list contains many former Bulls.

  • Mark,

As I said, it's the smart move to keep Derrick Byars.

History says he has a better chance of developing on an NBA bench, then in the d-league or europe. I hope they let him learn under John Salmons and the other veterans on the team. There is a good chance he may end up surprising everyone later with a break-out year in the near future.
