  • Ive noticed that Gibson has been getting alot of playing time, and while he has done a fantastic job, why is it that he is getting the majority of the minutes compared to Johnson? Isnt Johnson supposed to be the better player? Arent the Bulls wanting him to take on more of a power forward role? If thats the case I dont think he has been given sufficient time on the floor to prove his worth.

  • To add to that - do you have any insight into what they are telling Johnson to do on offense? He's had one or two games where he was active, handling the ball a bit, etc. The last couple games as soon as the Bulls get the ball, he just sprints to the corner or some other spot on the floor, trying to create spacing and be ready to shoot when the defense collapses. That is not who he is as a player.

With Rose out, why not experiment with him at Point Forward? He's more a point guard than Pargo will ever be, and watching Pargo attempt to run the offense is more painful than anything else. So with Rose out, why are the Bulls not at least attempting to see if Johnson can play that Scottie Pippen-Hedo Turkoglue role that seems to fit his skill set so well?

Isn't that the point of preseason? To see what works and what doesn't? NOT to see if Jannero Pargo can run your offense down the stretch of games - let's face it, that's NEVER going to happen in a game that matters.

  • In reply to DanFrystak:

I am very very very over watching Pargo run point. Makes me cringe when he has the ball.

  • In reply to DanFrystak:

Any info on what is really going on with Rose's ankle? I hear he's 1 or 2 games away from playing, but then I swear I see him limp every time he gets up to go to the huddle during a timeout etc...

I am a bit perplexed at starting Taj as well. I realize that Noah / Tyrus statistically don't work well together, but I still feel Tyrus needs to get his minutes and esp. start once the season comes. To me, its almost as if they are already trying to push him out the door. I figured that Johnson / Taj came in to give us some options at the F/PF position, but didn't think it would be this obvious they weren't that interested in keeping Tyrus around already (at least make him look appealing to trades like last year first).

As for Johnson, I too would like to see him run some point instead of Pargo. Call me crazy, but I love seeing big guys get to play point when capable. Let the guy use his natural skills...guess I'm secretly hoping for a lil Magic Johnson in him : )

P.S. Love Kirk. So underated, and makes one feel great that we are in good hands if Rose is out / on the bench (not to say that he's anywhere near the talent of Rose, but he's a damn fine backup who can fill it up, which I think people forget)

  • In reply to DanFrystak:

Is management going to make moving Deng in a trade a priority this season? Have they gotten over the idea that he is some kind of cornerstone and moved to the point they may move him for an expiring if the opportunity presents itself?

  • In reply to DanFrystak:

lets say the bulls use the frontcourt rotation you outlined with taj as a starter. how many wins does this add above the noah/thomas starting frontcourt? pretty negligible dont you think? i think people are so excited taj isnt terrible, and are so enamored of his motor they are forgetting that tyrus rebounds better, protects the rim better, gets to the line more, fouls less and has way better hands than taj. and hes younger. why risk perturbing the purportedly good chemistry the bulls have? it seems like we are making things more complicated than they need to be.

  • I don't see how it weakens the team. Salmon's natural position is SF and Kirk can step up as the starting SG. Both of them work better with Rose. We can easily pick up an expiring 2/3 that can play backup minutes to Kirk and Salmons.
If anything it will help us attract another fa. Without Deng's contract next year and salmons opting out, we will be able to offer two max contracts while having rose, kirk, noah, jj and taj on the roster. If Rose steps it up, we should be the front runners in fa as the only team that already has a star and can pay two max contracts. Not saying its likely, but we could theoritically land wade/bosh or bron/wade or bron/bosh.

  • The Deng trade point is interesting. Doug, do you see Portland as a possible fit? Webster, Outlaw and Bayless perhaps? Webster and Outlaw were obvious choices but the third player I was unsure about....Batum or Bayless would be included I would imagine. Outlaw gives us a partial expiring, Webster is on a longer term deal but it is smaller and he is a nice rotation player at SG/SF who can shoot.

  • This question is in regards to the possibility Rose makes the All Star team this year / what impact that has for the Bulls:

After his breakout season last year (though most people mostly only really noticed once he dropped 36 in the playoffs), I've noticed Rose all over the national media this year...Im talking a Bulls player with actual national appeal... He had his own edition of 2k Basketball (even as an add on style game), I see him all over on NBA TV commercials, he's pimped on B Ball blogs constantly, etc etc etc. Its fairly safe to say the media is willing to have him as one of the darlings alongside Kobe / Howard / Bron, which is impressive for a sophmore.

That being said, I always feel its of HUGE benefit to have someone like that on your roster. It drives sales for the team in about everything. Viewership up / tickets up / sponsors it naturally makes the Bulls feel like they are becoming a legitimate franchise again + one that free agents will start to consider as well. The Bulls have been missing that "guy" for a long long time. Women love Pooh, guys want his jersey.

That being said, do you think, even though their may technically be better / more mature point guards around, that Rose will get an All Star bid this year even if its just based of pure fandom (which obviously seems to be got a following wether you think he's premier yet or not)..?

  • We'd only be limited in not getting two guys if we are set on wade, bosh or bron. If we are willing to move down to amare, boozer or JJ we will easily be able to get two fas. I don't think any fas are really all that anamored with Deng. But I definitely think any potential fa like wade or bron would be much happier to sign with a boozer, amare or JJ than having deng around. Deng is clearly a notch or two below those guys.

  • In reply to TheStig:

Finding someone to take Deng is going to extremely difficult. If not part of a bigger trade, the only team I see as a good partner is Minnesota. Don't know if they would want to spend the money, but Deng would be a great improvement for them..

  • Doug,

I'm noticing a lot of cuts taking place around the league today. When do final cuts have to be made? I'm anxious to see, if the Bulls decided to keep Derrick Byars or not.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

    Roster deadline is Monday.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

    Thanks Mark.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

    Mark and Doug,

Here's an interesting trade idea for you two.

    To Bulls: Josh Howard
    To Warriors: Luol Deng
To Mavericks: Stephen Jackson and Acie Law

Jackson and Law are both from Texas, which is nice for them. Deng can play in front of Maggette at Golden State. Both of them went to Duke. Howard can play in front of Johnson in Chicago, who both went to Wake Forest. How about that?

Clearly, Jackson wants out of Golden State and Howard has been listed in trade rumors. I think it's an interesting idea.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

The Mavs would have to certainly receive a draft pick/s to consider doing this. Seeing as they are in "win now" mode, that hardly seems like a good reason.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

    Mark and Doug,

Here's the another trade idea to go with that first one.

To Bulls: Marcus Camby and Craig Smith
To Clippers: Tyrus Thomas, Jerome James and a draft pick

That's sets a better and more balanced Bulls roster.

    PG - Rose/Hinrich/Hunter
    SG - Salmons/Pargo/Byars
    SF - Howard/Johnson
    PF - Gibson/Miller/Smith
    C - Noah/Camby/Gray

Not only would they be able to win this year, but they would have better cap flexibility for next year.

  • In reply to MrHappy:

    Sounds like a chinese shuffle..

  • In reply to MrHappy:

    Hey Doug,

What happened to the free agent PF the bulls signed in the off-season (I think he was a PF)? I think you and I talked about him before, albeit briefly (psst, we worked together for a week or two before I changed jobs). Was I just imagining this signing? I can't find any info on the Bulls' site, the trib, or anywhere else for that matter.

    Hope all is well,
    Jason B.

  • Doug,

I'm not sure if my question went through. I was wondering when final cuts have to be made. There seems to be a lot of that happening today. There must have be close to 12 or so guys waived today around the league. I'm anxious to see what the Bulls decide to do with Byars and Richard.
