Omri Casspi
Maccabi Tel Aviv
NBA Position: SF
H: 6'9, W: 211, Age: 20 (almost 21)
First, I wasn't able to watch a huge sample of Omri's game as he only had about 16 games logged. Still, the sample was large enough to get some ideas about Omri.
He's a solid spot up shooter in accuracy and should be able to develop
NBA three point range. However, he has funky mechanics and a slow
release limiting the effectiveness of him as a spot up shooter relative
to other guys with much faster releases.
He doesn't have particularly good ball handling skills and doesn't use
advanced dribble techniques when trying to take guys off the dribble in
isolations, spot ups, or off the pick and roll. He really struggles
taking his man off the dribble in isolation or creating his own shot in
that fashion.
He also struggles taking jump shots off the dribble or pull up
jumpers. When he's not shooting his jump shot his accuracy goes down
considerably.
Despite his height, he doesn't seem likely able to play PF in the
NBA. He looks way too weak to be able to handle it to me. He's not
soft, but he'd need to add a lot of strength.
Looking at draftexpress's profile of him, they describe him as
athletic, but watching him I saw little evidence of an athletic player,
or at least one who was able to use his athleticism in a game.
Personally, the only reason I could envision a team taking Casspi is
that they could leave him in Europe and not pay him immediately.
Other than that, there's little advantage to taking him. He doesn't
seem prepared to come in and contribute. He looks too weak to play PF,
not athletic enough to play SF, his skills don't really impress me, nor
do his phsycials.
He wasn't an irrelevant player on his Euroleague team, but he isn't a
star either. I'd need to see considerable development to believe he
could have a role in the NBA, and at his age (21 in june) that doesn't
strike me as likely.
