Gordon downplays Pistons rumors

K.C. Johnson asked Ben Gordon for his views on the story that Gordon might be subject to a dedicated if excessive free agency bid by the Detroit Pistons. Ben's response:

'So, Ben Gordon, do you or your agent have a backroom agreement to sign with Detroit when the free-agency period begins July 1?

"You can't even negotiate until July 1, so that's just rumors," Gordon said Wednesday at his basketball camp in Lisle. "I really don't know what's going to happen." '

Well, fair enough. Those few non-committal words at least give off the
impression that, if there's a fire behind the Detroit smoke, then he's
never met it. An emphatic denial it is not, but it is a sensual backrub
that briefly soothes a persistent inflammation. We can sleep easier
tonight.
Cynicism aside, Gordon continues to do what he's always done, portraying the entirely correct outward image of a professional. He's wearing his Bulls gear, talking about his dreams of a bright future, acknowledging his free agency and desire to get paid, while taking care to show that the Bulls door is still open. His stock answer about retiring in Chicago stopped resonating after last summer's debacle, but it's the right thing to say anyway, if only to maintain consistency in his approach. So I'm buying.

Two weeks left.

  • Ironically, Doug wrote the title for this.

  • If he went to Detroit, oh my god, this dude will regret it!

  • Oh great, they've changed the title. Now I look a fool, dammit.
