The Independence Day atrocity that is Donald J. Trump

Warning:  Donald J. Trump is stealing America's celebration from YOU!

Happy Birthday, America! If you're wondering what the Fourth of July is all about, today marks the 243rd anniversary of the publication of the Declaration of Independence.

The Continental Congress (a congress that did things) declared independence on July 2, 1776, but the American Revolution actually began in April of 1775.

The Boston Tea Party (December 16, 1773), generally seen as one of the main incitements to war, wasn't really about taxation without representation.

The men who dressed up as Native Americans and threw chests of tea into Boston Harbor were actually smugglers who were pissed that the British undercut the price of tea smuggled into America.

Almost like today's drug traffickers whacking each other on street corners.

Since it was the Tea Act of 1773 that lowered the price of tea, the legend grew that the Tea Party was actually protesting taxes levied by the British, which is untrue.

Very much like the false pretenses of today's Tea Party.

In any case, the Tea Party of 1773 led to Parliament imposing the Intolerable Acts of 1774 and the table was set for increased conflict and, ultimately, war.

Hopefully, the short history presented above will prompt someone out there to check out a little bit of American History. Two things we seem to be failing dramatically at teaching young Americans is History and Civics.

It helps to know how we got here and how this is all supposed to work.

However you look at it, the men and women who died in the American Revolution were fighting for freedom.

Freedom from the regal control of a king. Freedom from one man rule. Freedom to choose their own destinies, to speak their minds, to practice their religions and to have a say in their governance.

The 4th of July celebration in Washington, DC has always been a non-political event. It has always been about Americans celebrating their good fortune and their freedom.

No president has ever politicized July 4th.  Donald Trump is about to turn it into one of his campaign rallies.

It's almost laughable when Kellyanne Conway told reporters that she isn't going to allow anyone to politicize the 4th of July.  Almost laughable because it's criminal.

We have to believe Kellyanne's husband, George when he says that she is a liar, loyal only to Donald Trump.

It's easy to make fun of America's barbecue mentality, but what could symbolize freedom better than our right to overload on hot dogs on a steamy afternoon in July?

Kim Jong-un, Supreme Leader of North Korea celebrates milestones with military parades, manifestations of the power he wields over his people.  So does Xi Jinping, president for life of China.

Military parades are the hallmark of tyrants, dictators and strongmen who use them to instill fear in their own citizens.

Throughout the 20th Century and a decade and half of the 21st, America has been respected around the globe as the preeminent military power.

While Xi Jinping may need to roll tanks through Tienamen Square to quell dissent, no American president has ever resorted to such a transparent flexing of military might.

The following appeared in my Twitter feed:

As the stupid people watch Donald Trump emulate the worst national leaders in the world, will they realize that July 4th is about freeing ourselves from one man rule, while the guy they're cheering is trying to rule without limitation?

On behalf of the author, I apologize for the "stupid people" reference, but if the shoe fits......

The American Revolution ended on September 3, 1783.  With the defeat of King George III and the British armies, America was free to pursue her goals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

A government of the people, by the people and for the people.

If you wouldn't mind, please turn down Sean Hannity for just a moment and tell me how 60-ton M1 Abrams tanks rolling across the Washington Mall reflect any of the values of those who died in the American Revolution or of the Founding Fathers.

How does this military parade reflect anything other than Donald J. Trump attempting to join the ranks of Kim Jong-un, Xi Jinping and King George III?
