With about two months to go until the start of Training Camp, much of what happens now I will attempt to class-up by calling sophisticated speculation. And it’s all part of the fun, after all. So, without further ado, here is the 14th installment of the Chicago Bears Huddle reader Q&A: A lot of the... Read more »

With everyone the Bears have lost and gained so far, do you think they’ll balance out and make a playoff run this year? — Noah Osen, via Twitter

Tough question, Noah. Let’s start with this: Since the George Halas era came to an end in 1967, not a single first-year head coach in Chicago Bears’ history has had a winning season: Jim Dooley (7-7), Abe Gibron (4-9-1), Jack Pardee (4-10), Neill Armstrong (7-9), Mike Ditka (3-6), Dave Wannstedt (7-9), Dick Jauron (6-10) and Lovie Smith (5-11).

Granted, head coaches are typically replaced after the team has already proven incapable of success, and the new guy gets stuck cleaning up the mess. For what it’s worth, and what will be left of it, Marc Trestman is inheriting a 10-6 team.

The historical crap aside, there is no doubt that G.M. Phil Emery improved his offense with the additions of Martellus Bennett and Jermon Bushrod. But what will happen to an aging defense that has lost, and could still stand to lose more, contributors? That’s the question, as it has been the defense which has kept the Bears in the hunt as of late.

They will now look to the offense to provide that in 2013, and I believe that could take some time. On the bright side, Trestman did indeed bring instant and sustained success to Montreal.
It seems as if I’ve absently slipped into a nice little niche of doing a Q&A session once per month with you folks. And since I haven’t done one all March, and since there’s a lot more going on now with Free Agency and the upcoming Draft, well … it’s a good time. Customary reminder:... Read more »

I will not neglect you Facebook and Google+ people next time, I promise. Standard reminder: You can always read the entire Q&A series right here. Off... Read more »

As the Chicago Bears, and Chicago Bears fandom alike, wait in holding pattern mode on the announcement of a new head coach, there is little tangible news to report and abundant wild speculation to rebuff. Said abundant speculation makes it the perfect time to hold another Reader Q&A session (one of my favorite things to... Read more »

I’m not going to sugarcoat it; when the team you’re covering—especially when that team also happens to be the team you root for—starts an over-hyped season 7-1 and then loses five of its last six, dangerously flirting with missing the playoffs, it’s hard to lace up the boots and come to work. Damn hard. At... Read more »

Read the entire Q&A series here. Every time I do this, I realize that I’ve forgotten how much work it is. But then I realize how much fun it is. There’s just no better way, in my estimation, to connect with a group of readers than a Q&A. Instead of me telling you what should... Read more »

It’s that time of year, unfortunately. The Draft has come and passed, and the excitement of the early free agency period is now but a distant memory. Mini-camps and OTAs are over, and we have a solid month before the first Training Camp practice of 2012. As Tom Petty put it, “the waiting is the... Read more »

The Bears concluded their off-season OTA and mini-camp program this week, and with it came a slew of questions from Bears fans.
