Bears make final roster cuts

Bears make final roster cuts
Bears will try to sign running back Armando Allen to the practice squad.

The Bears made League-mandated final roster cuts on Friday to get their roster down the regular season weight of 53-man. All told, 19 players were cut, while DT Nate Collins was moved to the Reserve/Suspended List. Collins was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana back in February and was suspended one game by the League for violating its substance abuse policy.

The Bears may not end up keeping Collins at all, and are rumored to be on the cusp of re-signing DT Amobi Okoye after losing him to the Buccaneers in free agency. Okoye was cut by the Bucs partially due to a lingering knee injury. It’s unclear what his current status is and if he’d be ready to step in with the Bears anytime soon. The Bears have not confirmed that rumor.

It’s very possible that the Bears wind up cutting Collins if a deal with Okoye is reached, but placing him on Reserve/Suspended allows them to wait on a decision.

Also cut was running back Armando Allen, who turned some heads in camp this offseason but was ultimately waived in favor of Lorenzo Booker, who likely gives the Bears a little more production on special teams.

When it comes to a third back, especially behind players like Matt Forte and Michael Bush, if you have a guy who can give you that extra bump on special teams, it makes sense to go that route. The Bears are also building a roster to compete for a title this season, not in the future. So while your third back may not be a factor in that ultimate goal anyway, the mindset is to keep a roster of contributors.

The Bears will try to sign Allen to the practice squad and keep him in the organization.

Also cut was QB Josh McCown, as the Bears will try to sign QB Matt Blanchard to their eight-man practice squad on Saturday; essentially making Blanchard the third QB behind Jason Campbell as the Bears would be able to promote him up in a time of need. No guarantee they’d do that, as opposed to trying to re-sign a McCown off the street, but C'est la vie.

Not a whole lot else to get into in terms of who was cut. No real big surprises. Below is yesterday’s list, but keep in mind that these things are never really done throughout the season, and most certainly the day following “final cuts.” We’ll see a lot more cuts around the League today and in the coming weeks.
