I truly believe it when I say that Chicago is one of the greatest live music cities in the country.  Memphis?  Nashville?  Austin?  New Orleans?  All great... But I'd put Chicago right there with any of them.  As Chicagoans, we truly are lucky to have the opportunity to see so much great live music night in and night out at scores of oustanding and unique venues.  From Paul McCartney to Ben Harper (and everywhere in between), here are the concerts that moved me in 2011 and made me consistenly remember why live music is my favorite thing in the world.  ...

Lollapalooza arrived as a Chicago destination festival in 2005. While the festival’s domination of the local music scene certainly has its drawbacks, one of the more exciting aspects of Lollapalooza’s annual stay is the special aftershows that generally see bigger bands playing smaller clubs.  As sort of a make good to local club venues, who lose large amounts of summer business to the festival, past aftershows have included bills as impressive as the live debut of Them Crooked Vultures at Metro and artists like MGMT or Kings of Leon at the House of Blues. While this year’s most notable aftershow was probably the Foo Fighters appearance with The Joy Formidable at Metro, it was actually a show a few blocks away that piqued my interest:  Fitz & The Tantrums at Schubas. ...

    Jim Ryan

    Jim Ryan has written about music in print and online for a variety of Chicagoland publications for over fifteen years. In addition to duties filling in as Traffic Anchor on CLTV or in the helicopter on NBC 5, you can also catch him Sunday nights at 6PM central as host of "The Rock N' Roll Radio Program" on AM 1420 WIMS and AM 1060 WHFB (streaming at and via the TuneIn Radio app for the smart phone or tablet). Jim has also worked locally for WXRT-FM, lives within walking distance of the Metro and is an avid White Sox and Blackhawks fan whose first live concert experience came at Comiskey Park in 1984 during the Jacksons' "Victory" tour.
