Welsh alternative power trio The Joy Formidable, featuring vocalist/guitarist Rhiannon "Ritzy" Bryan, Rhydian Dafydd Davies on bass, and drummer Matthew James Thomas, hit Chicago Saturday for a full schedule of performances.
Starting at 12:30 in the afternoon, Saturday's slate began at JBTV for an acoustic taping and continued with another unplugged set as the pre-show teaser/meet-and-greet prior to a sold-out performance as an electric trio later that night at Lincoln Hall.
The Welsh group's love for Chicago fans was apparent throughout the day, reciprocated during performances across the city.
According to JBTV, The Joy Formidable now joins acts like Portugal. The Man as one of the most frequent to record in-studio for the long running local show.
Matthew James Thomas was traveling separately so bassist Rhydian Dafydd Davies picked up an acoustic guitar, joining Bryan for unique reworkings of the group's most rocking selections in the acoustic setting (shining a light on beautiful harmonies that often wind up overlooked when performed amidst the trio's wall of electric sound).
The two extremes of their full electric show and the acoustic sets demonstrated the breadth of their unique blend of intricate guitar work and wonderful vocal harmonies.
Bryan was affable and entertaining throughout as the group put forth a whirring cacophony of sound throughout the day Saturday in Chicago.
