Concert Preview: 2013 Wavefront Music Festival (July 5-7 at Montrose Beach)

With more than one hundred artists performing on four stages, the Wavefront Music Festival returns to scenic Montrose Beach on the city of Chicago's far north side featuring three days worth of electronic music and performances by artists like Fatboy Slim, Rusko, LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, Cedric Gervais, Diplo and more...

Over the course of the past few years, the city of Chicago, surprisingly, has continued to become more and more hospitable to major, destination, outdoor music festivals.

City parks continue to offer concertgoers a more scenic atmosphere in which to beat the heat, find some shade and enjoy live music (certainly more so than the uninviting, homogeneous, often sweltering concrete locale of sheds like the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in Tinley Park, which for years was the default venue for just about every traveling festival: Lollapalooza, H.O.R.D.E., Warped, Lilith, Ozzfest and more).

Lollapalooza dominates Grant Park, Pitchfork and North Coast populate Union Park and Riot Fest made its outdoor debut last fall in Humboldt Park... but far and away the most inviting, picturesque backdrop for an outdoor music festival in Chicago is that of Montrose Beach, which the Wavefront Music Festival calls home once again in 2013.

Building on the continued success and increasing widespread, mainstream appeal of electronic music throughout not only Chicago but the country, the Wavefront Music Festival returns to Chicago's underutilized northern lakefront for it's second year.

Adding a third day in 2013, the festival features an array of artists across a variety of electronic music genres with a specific nod toward those residing in or hailing from right here in Chicago (the birthplace of house music).

Here's what I'm looking forward to at the 2013 Wavefront Music Festival...

2013 Wavefront Music Festival Chicago Lineup poster

Friday, July 5, 2013

Performers: Danny Tenaglia, DJ Tennis, Cedric Gervais, Skyler Mendoza, Holy Ghost, Guy Gerber, pleasurekraft, Kid Color and many more

James Murphy (8:30PM) - As frontman of New York based, alternative-dance outfit LCD Soundsystem for nearly ten years, Murphy managed to crack the Billboard top ten.  Citing influences like Talking Heads, the Velvet Underground and even YES, Murphy worked, once upon a time, for venerable alt label Sub Pop and has collaborated with everyone from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to Gorillaz and Outkast's Andre 3000 (a pretty good indication of his range)... all of which has me intrigued to see what he can conjure up in a solo set.

Saturday, July 6, 2013

Performers: Seth Troxler, Dubfire, Frankie Knuckles & Jamie Principal, Audion, Rusko, Bad Boy Bill, Derrick Carter vs. Mark Farina and many more

Fatboy Slim (8:30PM) - Preceding the massively successful release of Moby's Play album in June of 1999 by a scant eight months with You've Come A Long Way, Baby, British DJ Norman Cook followed up on the previous mainstream success of artists like The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk about a year earlier and used the medium of videos on MTV (specifically, ingenious collaborations with director Spike Jonze on "Praise You" and the Christopher Walken led "Weapon of Choice") to really blow open the big beat doors, amongst the first to expose electronic music to the masses.

DJ Rony Seikaly - 2013 Wavefront Music Festival, Chicago

Sunday, July 7, 2013

Performers: Nicolas Jaar, Hot Natured, Jamie Jones, Damian Lazarus, Diplo and many more

Rony Seikaly (1:30PM) - He played for the Miami Heat before it was chic and now he's an internationally renowned DJ... who'da thunk?

Night Plane (2PM) - Deep house and electronic pop performed by live duo featuring founder William Rauscher as well as Casey Gibbs on vocals and lead guitar.  They've remixed Warpaint and covered Pavement which leaves me curious to see how they'll translate in the live setting on the final day of the 2013 Wavefront Music Festival.
