This Wednesday at the Palmer House Hilton, Chicago Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster and wife Jenny will take part in the third annual Dempster Family Foundation Casino Night. To raise awareness and money for "Strike Out 22Q" and assist other Chicagoland charities, the event will feature a performance from 2010 American Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox, the Sinatraesque vocal stylings of John Vincent, appearances by Cubs players, both silent and live auctions and more.
In 2009, the Demspters' daughter Riley was born with DiGeorge Syndrome (22q11.2 deletion/VCFS) a genetic disease that can cause a wide range of health and developmental issues.
For the third consecutive year, the Dempsters will aim to raise awareness and money for the disease at Wednesday's casino night, one of the biggest events that the Dempster Family Foundation puts on each year.
This year's theme is "Old Chicago" and once again Dempster's fellow Cub teammates will be acting as Casino Night dealers... But it's not all fun and baseball as this year's event will also feature a live acoustic performance from singer-songwriter Crystal Bowersox not to mention an always swingin' take on Sinatra by Ditka's Restaurant mainstay John Vincent.
Bowersox was living in Chicago when she was voted runner-up in 2010 on the ninth season of American Idol. In a matter of only months, she went from performing in front of morning commuters on CTA subway platforms to singing for millions nightly on the highly rated Fox reality show.
"It was a complete 180. I moved to Chicago in the beginning of 2004 and had been there for a couple of years before I tried out for Idol and I was performing in the subways and stuff and on street corners, wherever anyone would listen. So I had a lot of really good practice for those running notes on American Idol, the real big ones. Singing over trains and things helped me out!" says Crystal.
Bowersox, readying the release of the Once Upon a Time EP on May 29th on her own Mamasox Music, attended Casino Night last year but will be playing at the event for her first time. "My husband and I will be performing. It’s an acoustic show so people can expect I guess an intimate evening with Crystal Bowersox!"
In addition to guesting on the forthcoming new album from bluesy-jammers Blues Traveler, Bowersox remains hard at work on the full-length followup to her 2010 major label debut Farmer's Daughter. "The next album is gonna be called All That For This... If it’s done soon enough, it could be [out] this fall but I think I’m really shooting for next spring."
In addition to the casino games and live music, Casino Night attendees will also have the chance to check out both a live and silent auction. While the marquee auction item this year is most certainly the baseball autographed by legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, music fans will no doubt be intrigued by several cool music items that will up be for bid as well:
- A Garth Brooks signed guitar
- Doobie Brothers concert tickets
- Tickets to Bruce Springsteen concert at Wrigley Field
- A Crystal Bowersox signed guitar
- Tickets to see Enrique Iglesias, Adam Lambert and more at Allstate Arena
As if the auctions, live music, casino games and celebrity sightseeing weren't enough, tickets also include food and open bar... So make yourself available for a great cause this Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Palmer House Hilton.
