The Makeup Show Chicago continues to be a resource for makeup artists and enthusiasts by bringing together some of the biggest and best brands in the industry all under one roof. Whether you want the latest scoop on hot products or cool trends this is the place to be to meet the famous faces behind the brands as well as the international artists and educators. The Makeup Show’s Director of Education and Artists Relations, Celebrity Makeup Artist James Vincent, knows Chicago well and has witnessed first hand the humidity and hot summer days that make it nearly impossible for women to keep their makeup looking polished and perfect. Having worked with such celebrities as Florence Welch, Jillian Michaels and Joan Jett for Chicagoland performances he has some insight on how to keep your complexion set and your color makeup looking its best while beating the summer heat.
Look 1 – Grunge Gorgeousness
This nod to the nineties was all over the runway and red carpet this season including designers Rick Owens, Diane Von Furstenberg and Alexander McQueen. It is perfect for a day at the beach or brunch with the girls. Easy and effortless this looks lends itself to dressing up or dressing down and gives a fashion edge to even the simplest look.
Start the look with MAC Face and Body Foundation for sheer, water-proof and sweat-proof coverage and is a great option for any complexion. Skip powder and set this all in place with Make Up For Ever Mist and Fix. It is the perfect setting spray for an easy makeup look that keeps even the toughest color in place. Brows are soft and structured with this look and should be a focal point which will allow you to keep the rest of the look minimal. Kevyn Aucoin The Precision Brow Pencil paired with Anastasia Beverly Hills Beauty Genius Clear Waterproofing Gel gives you the eyebrows every woman wants and makes it worry free. The eyelid look is simple here with just a wash of Smashbox Limitless 15 Hour Cream Eyeshadow in Topaz or Quartz sheered all over the eye from brow to lash. Line the eyes on the top and bottom with Make Up For Ever Aqua Black for smudgy, smoky sexiness that stays put in the most intense humidity. Finish with a liberal application of INGLOT Volume and Waterproof Mascara for thick, luscious lashes and let the eyes have all the attention. Lips and cheek complete the look with Stila Lip and Cheek Stain for a stay in place color that provides the perfect pout.
Pro Tip: "Take Make Up For Ever Aqua Black inside the eye as well. It stays all day and gives added depth and dimension that delivers a gorgeous grunge look with polish and sophistication. For even more daring drama add Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics deep burgundy Lip Tar in Black Dahlia. This was featured in New York Fashion week on multiple designer runways including the debut of Chicago based designer Juju Lacour for his collection Maison de Lacour.”
Look 2 –Gold Rush
As seen on the summer runways for Chanel, Versace and Gucci the gilded eye look will have every woman getting attention. Mined metals have made a big impact this season and gold is flattering for any and every skin tone from the lightest to the darkest. Mehron No Sweat Skin Prep is the perfect primer for long days that lead into late nights and never lets your secrets show. Any foundation works well over it but try pairing it with one of the must have BB Creams from AJ Crimson, Embryolisse or Stila for a sheer summer coverage. Set this in place with INGLOT Cosmetics new Mattifying 3S Powder and look impeccable all day. Make Up For Ever Aqua Shadows and Aqua Creams and Kett Cosmetics Metallics lend themselves well to warm weather looks and stay where you put them without wear and tear, try any of the number of gold shades from bright, bold yellow gold to slightly gilded or antique and give yourself a gorgeous, glimmering eye. Keep the liner looking fresh all day with Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner or Stila Smudge Crayon Waterproof Eye Color in bold black shades and line in bold wide shapes or soft, ladylike lines for any look you desire. Add Ellis Faas Mascara for eyelashes everyone will envy. NARS Multiple in South Beach completes this look on lips and cheeks and lets the eyes be the primary focus.
Pro Tip: "Try blotting paper from Nurturing Force as an easy carry in any hand bag or cosmetic kit for keeping the makeup shine free. If you want to add in a bit of glamour or drama bring in Temtpu Airbrow for an elegant eyebrow that never moves and will frame your gorgeous metallic eye.”
Look 3 – Think Pink
Let pink be your signature color like designers Dries Van Noten, Donna Karan and Michael Kors. Keep this bold, beautiful color in an easy to wear application by making a monochromatic statement with pink applied everywhere and anywhere in your makeup application. Do not be afraid of cream foundations or tinted moisturizers in summer months. Try Grafrobian HD Foundation or Mehron Celebre Pro for perfect complexion that allows you to control where you place it and how much coverage you apply allowing for a customized complexion. Set it in place with Cinema Secrets Ultralucent Loose Powder. Eyes get a wash of pink color from crease to lash. Try bold, bright pinks provided by independent brands like I Make You Beautiful or Magnolia Makeup or soft, washes of color from companies like Viseart available through Alcone NYC. Try Blue Eye liner and Blue Mascara for a subtle hint of color that brightens eyes and complexion. Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner and Aqua Mascara is a great option or if you prefer pencil add in Inglot or Anastasia Waterproof Pencils. Lips are the focal point with perfect pink applied for maximum impact. NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Yu paired with Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Anime or if you want a metallic Pink pout try Lip Tar in Yaoi. Complete the cheek here with Temptu Blush in a large assortment of pink shades or if you prefer powder try Inglot for a pinch of color on the apple of the cheek.
Pro Tip: "The brush can make all the difference. Use Crown Brush Small Oval Foundation Brush for applying blush that is balanced and natural and gives the look like it is glowing through your own skin”.
