Chicago Fashion: Spring 2013 Trends to Try

Yes Chicago, Spring is almost here! And of course you know what this means.... The new season will be bringing fresh fashion trends to test and try. So naturally CHI-lebrity called upon Yahoo! Shine’s Senior Fashion and Beauty Editor Joanna Douglas to share her do's and don'ts of the season's hottest looks, creating this list of the styles we’ll be seeing, as well as a few looks that should be put into hibernation.  Read on for your style cheat sheet!

Black & White : An absence  of color is the big story for spring, as crisp black and white take center stage.    “We’ll see lots of bold graphic prints, stripes, and color-blocking with these  polar shades. This trend is  going to see explode very quickly so jump on board now with a black and white dress and pair it with tights and boots till it warms up,” says Douglas.

Flower Power!: Floral prints (specifically small and extra-large floral prints) are going to be everywhere, from jeans to tops to dresses.  Speaking of which, dresses are back, especially  ‘90s style babydolls  and also fit-and-flare skater-style dresses, which are very feminine and flattering.

Pedal to the Metal: Holographic materials and metallics – from silver and gold to colored metallics like pink purple and blue – are big style news. “I’m seeing lots of mirrored sunglasses, silver pumps, iridescent clutches—it’s very trendy, playful and fun,” says Douglas.  Little touches go a long way: “A rose gold skinny belt or glistening flat sandals will spice up your wardrobe.”  The holographic trend has made its way to finger tips, so trade last year’s glitter polish  for high-shine metallic colors and dual-tone lacquers that change in the light.

Attention-getting pants: Skinny jeans aren’t going anywhere, but bold pants are making a comeback in silky and flow-y fabrics. Try a strong color or even a print if you’re truly daring (just make sure to pair these pants with a basic top).

Must-have accessory/clothing item : “Sporty” is the new chic, as baseball hats with a fashionable flair are the hot accessory. Madewell’s floral baseball hat sold out immediately, and leather baseball hats are the new rage.  Further, a cool sweatshirt is spring’s biggest clothing must-have. “They were all over the spring and fall runways, and I think this relates to the baseball trend in making streetwear upscale,” says Douglas. These are  not your bulky, grimy sweats – instead they  are dressed-up sweatshirts with floral prints, lace, graphic designs, or even just a gorgeous color are unexpected and cool.

Toss It!:   Say goodbye to mullet dresses with hi-low hemlines, and also to tribal prints. The over-embellished look has also expired: spikes and studs should be worn in moderation.

Think pink - For makeup this season is all about showcasing your clear vibrant skin through minimal makeup. Pink is definitely the “it” lip color ranging from a sheer natural shade to a juicy hot pink or fuchsia. Brands are getting creative with lipstick textures, so if you’ve been shy in the past, there are many lightweight formulas, gloss-hybrids, pencils, stains, and everything in between.  For nails, if you don’t go metallic, try a sorbet color like pretty lilac, mint green, or a pinky-coral. “These shades in between a strong color and a pastel and it feels just right,” says Douglas.
