If you ever find yourself off work before 6pm, do yourself a favor and head down to the Oyster Bar at Shaw’s Crab House, the famous Chicago institution, for happy hour. It’s the best in Chicago, at least for those of us of a certain age who are more excited by half price oysters than $1 PBRs.
A dozen of Shaw’s outstanding oysters, all shucked to order, will typically put you back $30 ($2.50 each). Not a cheap appetizer. But go during happy hour, and that oyster dozen costs $15 ($1.25 each). Only select oysters are available at half price, but the ones the hubby and I had – Island Creek from Duxbury Harbor, Massachusetts, and Pickering Pass from Puget Sound, Washington – were spectacular.

Two kinds of toppings accompanied the oysters, the classic cocktail sauce and horseradish mix, and a champagne infused ice with shallots and pepper. The champagne infused ice added sophisticated, floral notes to the oyster, but I’m a traditionalist at heart when it comes to eating oysters, and I stuck mostly with the cocktail sauce with horseradish. And the large, dense oyster crackers that flanked the oyster bar. Mmmm.
With such great oysters at such low prices, you may be tempted to make a meal out of happy hour (that’s totally classy, right?). We did. Fortunately, oysters are an excellent source of protein and healthy fats. And some claim they’re an aphrodisiac. Keep in mind, though, that oysters are high in cholesterol, so even those not particularly watching their cholesterol intake should limit their oyster smorgasbord eating. But how often are you actually done with work before 6 pm anyways, right?
