Get Your Raw Bar On at King Crab

There’s something inherently satisfying about eating oysters at a dive bar. It feels properly gritty and somehow truer to its ocean origins than dining on oysters elegantly displayed over perfectly shaped ice at some fancy restaurant. Not many places do this right, but King Crab Tavern and Seafood Grill in Lincoln Park/DePaul definitely does. Decorated – ironically – with an overabundance of nautical items, King Crab is an unpretentious neighborhood haunt to get your raw bar on. The hubby and I happened upon it after an event for Steppenwolf, just down the street, and were immediately sold. The prices were great (even better if you get one of their nightly specials), the service was friendly and quick despite the restaurant’s laid-back vibe, and the food was solid.

Not particularly hungry, the hubby and I shared a dozen Blue Point and Chesapeake oysters and half a dozen shrimp.

Oysters, shrimp, and other (not-fried) raw bar items are an excellent healthy option while eating out, so long as you do not have cholesterol or gout issues. Plus, the lean protein is particularly filling.

I’m looking forward to paying a return visit to King Crab…and maybe trying the king crab dish. I saw a server walk by with it, and it looked delicious!
