Sports Parents - what kind are you?

I've spent a good portion of my adult life watching youth sports.  The last couple of years I've really settled into a groove and started having time to watch parents.  Some of them are rotten crazy, some are fantastic and most are somewhere in betwen.
Whenever I'm watching a big event, such as the World Cup, Superbowl or Olympics, where clearly a parent had an over-achieving

child athlete, I wonder what they did to help catapult their athlete.  Even just watching the Bears against the Packers last night.  All those guys had parents along the way - what type were (are) they?

Starting from very young, there are definitely stereotypical parents on every team ranging from one extreme to another.  All levels of athletes started somewhere.  Do you believe some portion of success depends upon what type of sporting parent they had?
I think I've been a couple of these parents.  I like to hope the older I get, the more of an ideal parent I become, however I do recognize some of the bad qualities in myself.  I happen to love Oprah's quote:  When you know better, you do better.  Hopefully this will shed some light and we'll do better...

  • Is that why your voice sounded a bit cracky at the race? :) Great piece! My husband is a combo of them all, I think, but the absent parent.
