Miss USA pics - scandalous or brilliant marketing?

Let's face it, the adult beauty pageants are really dated and I don't know anyone who actually watches them anymore.  The only way they get attention is if there is a scandal.  Whether it's a drunk crown holder, or a controversial statement in the question and answer session.

This year, it's photos. The pageant directors choose a theme each year for the contestant's photos.  Apparently this year it's "slutty".  They defend it as keeping up with the times.  I'm not sure when the times started indicating that lingerie as being high fashion and classy, but I find it really disturbing.  Since I'm raising four daughters, I've always taught them that beauty pageants are just a ridiculous way to expose insecure women.  So thank you Miss USA and Mr. Donald Trump for proving once again that pageants provide no role models.
However, they did find a brilliant way to market a dying contest.  I'm sure there will be millions of additional viewers this year.
What do you think: Keeping up with the times, or reaching an all time low?

  • Well, I'm sure men will like this marketing approach. Sign of times maybe...we air Victoria Secret commercials like they're selling strawberry jam. One of stores used to be located directly across from the Disney Store at our local mall. Argh. How are at-risk women supposed to feel good about themselves, when we offer stuff like this? Personally, I think women/girls should NEVER rely on their looks or figure...I don't even think my kids know these contests exist. (Don't know how long I can keep it that way...I'm sure they've read about them, but they've never seen one.) They've always been stupid if you ask me. Great post!
P.S. A lot of these outfits cover more than bathing suits these days, but that's another story. Think you've covered that in your beach story. :)

It is crazy, isn't it? I actually feel sad for these women. They can't be confident and strong and still expose themselves this way, can they?
It's not only what they're wearing, but did you see some of their expressions? I have to make sure my kids don't see this post...
On the flip side, I do have to commend them for trying to re-create the pageant. I'm the perpetual marketing student, but also wonder... at what costs?
