Thank You, Holly Robinson Peete!

Thank You, Holly Robinson Peete!
I’ve worked the red carpet as a journalist since the 1990s and being the fashion maven (I think I am) when the opportunity presents itself I ask the celebrities what they are wearing, particularly the ladies. That is so that I can either steal the look or simply share with readers who may themselves be... Read more »

F*cking AWESOME: Thrift Shops No Longer Getting a Bad Rap (or Maybe They Are--Depends on How You Look at It)

Thumbnail image for 'F*cking AWESOME: Thrift Shops No Longer Getting a Bad Rap (or Maybe They Are--Depends on How You Look at It)'
So I’m watching the Macklemore video “Thrift Shop” for the first time the other day. The clip shows the rapper hitting the clubs all decked out in his Sunday Best, complete with green alligator shoes on his feet and a girl on each arm. Although he looks the part of baller, he’s rapping the praises... Read more »

Chaka Khan at Chicago's Millennium Park on July 28, 2013

Chaka Khan at Chicago's Millennium Park on July 28, 2013
There were no empty spots left even on the lawn as 10-time Grammy winner Chaka Khan hit the stage at 7:30 p.m. before a capacity crowd in Millennium Park on Sunday. The newly slender Chicago native opened the show with the Prince remake “I Feel for You” before going into an attitude laced version of “What Cha’ Gonna Do for Me.”... Read more »

How I Show My Gay Pride

How I Show My Gay Pride
I grew up in Lincoln Park, a place that for a time I thought was the gayest of neighborhoods because over the 17 years I lived there, everyone who lived on either side of our townhouse seemed to be gay. I mean that in a good way. I also beam with pride because not being... Read more »

Rihanna at United Center on March 22, 2013
After arriving over four hours late to Barrington High School on Friday afternoon March 22, 2013, Rihanna hit the stage later that evening almost another hour late to her sold-out show at the United Center. Apparently, fans are willing to wait for the pop-star diva. Question is, Is she worth it?

Chicago native Jennifer Hudson celebrated the holidays by feting Michigan Avenue Magazine at the House of Blues on Tuesday, December 4, 2012, marking the second time former American Idol contestant has appeared as the publication’s cover girl. The invitation-only event, dubbed “A Hudson Holiday,” required that all attendees bring a new unwrapped book or toy for... Read more »

Bill and Giuliana's Next Big Adventure

Rancic, shown here with Avner, shared a sentimental moment with attendees, in which she spoke of being “blind-sided” by her diagnosis. Before then, everything was going well. “I had a great husband … a great career.”
Last month, when I hit the Bright Pink Fab Fest, hosted by E! News anchor Giuliana Rancic, I was shocked when she reminded me that her breast-cancer diagnosis occurred only nine months ago. It seems like eons because she’s packed in a lot activism in that time. Anyone who’s watched her and husband Bill’s reality-TV... Read more »

Flashback: My Weekend Riding Aboard the Soul Train, Remembering Don Cornelius

Last September Don Cornelius was honored in Chicago's Millennium Park with a street named after him. The event also celebrated Soul Train's 40th anniversary.

Last month when Don Cornelius died, a flood of memories rushed my head. After much thought I realized that, in hindsight, his influence helped bring me into focus on what I wanted to do in life. My desire to work in entertainment began to click in the early 1980s, foremost with the influence of Michael... Read more »

Hitting Below the Belt (or the Lack of One)

I'm not sure I like the lead singer of Of Montreal in Daisy Dukes and purple stockings either. Photos by Cindy Barrymore
The headline reads “Green Day Frontman Kicked off the Plane for Saggy Pants.” The New York Times mentioned the incident, as did USA Today, and a slew of other mainstream news organizations that I can only hope printed this story to take a stand against fashion nonsense rather than because they deemed Billie Joe Armstrong’s... I am internationally published, award-winning journalist who has worked in just about every facet of media from TV and film to magazines, promotional materials, newspapers, and books. I currently work as a media consultant, which (in addition to coaching executives in Corporate America) also includes writing and shooting photography for PR and journalistic publication. I have covered entertainment, specifically, since the 1990s, as well as performed as an actor and singer in TV commercials and industrial film, and studied arts, fashion and pop-culture history. My writing has published in such publications as the Chicago Tribune, Us Weekly, Reader’s Digest, Vibe and Circus magazines. My photography has appeared in People, the Daily Beast, OK!, Self, Life and Style, Glamour, and on E!, Wendy Williams Show, and Oxygen, to name a few. I've interviewed celebrities as diverse as Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Kiss, STP, Dio, Kanye West, and Presidents Clinton and Obama. In between blogging for Chicago Now, I also founded my own successful entertainment blog ChicaHollywood.com and have also blogged for VH1. As a kid I once danced on the shows Soul Train and Hangin' with MTV. I have three graduate degrees in communications and continue to further my academic education. (Hopefully, I will finish my PhD this decade!) With this blog, I look forward to making you think and to ask questions. But most importantly I aspire to make you smile. Because hopefully as I do with myself, I do not take those wacky celebrities that seriously.... Kim Kardashian for President! Lindsay Lohan for V.P.
